Genus Stephanus Jurine, 1800

Stephanus Jurine (in Panzer) 1800: 76 , Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13–14 . Type species (by monotypy): Stephanus coronatus Jurine (in Panzer), 1800 (= Ichneumon serrator Fabricius, 1798 ).

Diagnosis. Temple at most with a yellow patch, without any streak along the eye; sdc1 of fore wing basally narrow; 1-SR differentiated with dc1 present; 1-SR+M of fore wing present; hind wing with M+CU, no cu-a vein; hind femur distinctly slender and elongate with coarse striations, ventrally with 2–3 (rarely 4) large teeth; inner side of hind tibia only with a short narrow oblique groove below a small convexity; hind tarsus of female with five tarsomeres; ovipositor sheath completely blackish or brown without a subapical yellow patch.

Distribution. Palaearctic and Oriental ( van Achterberg 2002; van Achterberg & Yang 2004; Hong et al. 2011).

Notes. Five species in the genus Stephanus are known worldwide. In this paper, we describe the male specimen of species S. bidentatus from India, previously described from China. Since part of Andaman and Nicobar islands ( India: Nicobar islands) lies in the distinct Sundaland biogeographical region of the Oriental region, there is a high possibility of occurrence of species reported from the Sunda area ( S. borneensis and S. soror ) from the Indian mainland. A key to world species of Stephanus is also provided for identification, if encountered.
