The Zoological Journal, 2, 391–405 (p. 398, as Icterina). Type genus: Icterus Brisson, 1760 .
Diagnosis. No known diagnostic morphological characters, although plumages with striking combinations of black and varying shades of orange and yellow are characteristic, at least in males (Omland & Lanyon 2000). Diagnosed molecularly by the unreversed synapomorphies A 11 T, A 898 G, G 1036 A in mitochondrial ND 2 and T 8 C, C 307 A in cytochrome b (where M###N indicates ancestral state M, alignment position ###, and derived state N), and in the following nuclear loci: ACO 1 intron 9 (a single base deletion at position 48, T 307 A, A 581 G, G 876 A), RAG 1 (C 659 A, T 2482 C), FGB intron 5 (T 172 C, C 477 T, T 510 G, and T 513 G), and MB intron 2 (T 136 C, G 320 C, G 481 A, A 483 C, and C 689 T).
Component genera: Icterus Brisson, 1760 .
