Corethrella (Corethrella) redacta Borkent View in CoL , new species

DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: unknown. Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella in the New World with the head laterally elongate ( Fig. 8D), with flagellomere 1 moderately elongate but flagellomere 2 short ( Fig. 27I), the head laterally elongate ( Fig. 8D), a plain wing (Fig. 68C), the thorax nearly uniformly pigmented with dorsal margin of the katepisternum pale ( Fig. 44B), and with nearly uniformly pigmented legs with only the basal half of the hind femur pale.

DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Unknown. Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6–11. Head: Outline in anterior view laterally elongate ( Fig. 8D). Coronal suture elongate, extending ventrally past ommatida (as in Fig. 16D). Four large setae on frons between ventromedial area of ommatida (as in Fig. 16D). Antenna uniformly brown; pedicel with at least one distinctive, more elongate, stout, dorsal or dorsolateral seta; flagellomeres as in Fig. 27I, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1; flagellomere 13 with welldeveloped apical bifurcation. Clypeus ( Fig. 17Z) squarish. Mandible with small, pointed teeth. Palpus ( Fig. 33 AB) brown; segment 3 somewhat ovoid, swollen at or near midlength. Thorax ( Fig. 44B): Nearly uniformly medium brown, with dorsal margin of katepisternum pale, pale sclerites around base of wing. Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with 2 elongate setae situated somewhat lateral to one another. Prescutal suture short, not extending more than half way to dorsocentral row of setae. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum triangular, uniformly brown, with anterodorsal margin thick. Wing (Fig. 68C): Apex of R 2 slightly basal to apex of M 1. Plain, without pattern of pigmented veins and/or scales; veins (other than costa and wing margin) with well-developed scales. Halter as dark as scutellum (only part of one halter present). Legs ( Fig. 44B): Nearly uniformly medium brown, with about basal half of hind femur pale. Femora, tibiae and at least some tarsomeres with broad scales (also some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Midleg with thick, subapical setae on each of at least tarsomeres 1–3. Claws of each leg equal to those of others; equal on each leg, simple (without inner teeth). Empodia slender. Abdomen: Segments uniformly medium brown.

Immatures. Unknown.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella redacta is known from only from the type locality in northeastern Brazil (Fig. 127) at an altitude of 30 m. The holotype was collected with a light trap .

TAXONOMIC DISCUSSION: The holotype is missing all of one and most of the other halter.

TYPE: Holotype, female adult on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Corethrella redacta Borkent , Lutzomiops sp. c, USNM, Guana River Pump Stations, Instituto de Pesquisas e Experimentacao Agropecuarias do Norte, nr Belem, Para, Brazil, 30 m, 29–30-IX-1970, LT, BRB Belem 43, Mosq. Mid. Amer." ( USNM).

DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name redacta (reduced) refers to the short second flagellomere of the female of this species.
