Corethrella (Corethrella) ugandensis Borkent View in CoL , new species

DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: only extant species of Corethrella in the Afrotropical Region with a midlength wing band (Fig. 62J), the hind tibia with discrete basal and apical dark pigmentation (as in Fig. 45C), with the apex of the aedeagus rounded, and gonostylus with apical setae short and slender (Fig. 88D). Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella in the Afrotropical Region with a midlength wing band (Fig. 68G), a wing length of 1.45–1.55 mm and the hind tibia with discrete basal and apical dark pigmentation ( Fig. 45C).

DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 2–5. Head: Outline in anterior view laterally elongate (as in Fig. 8H). Two large setae on frons between ventromedial area of ommatida (as in Fig. 16E). Antenna light brown; pedicel with at least one distinctive, more elongate, stout, dorsal or dorsolateral seta; flagellomeres as in Fig. 21D, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1; flagellomere 13 with welldeveloped apical bifurcation. Palpus pale; segment 3 of nearly constant width. Thorax (as in Fig. 45C): Uniformly medium brown. Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with 2 elongate setae situated somewhat lateral to one another. Prescutal suture short, not extending more than half way to dorsocentral row of setae. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum triangular, uniformly brown, with anterodorsal margin thick. Wing (Fig. 62J): Apex of R 2 slightly distal to apex of M 1. Anterior margin with differently, discretely pigmented scales (indicating anterior margin of midlength band), with midlength band (darker anteriorly, posteriorly); veins (other than costa and wing margin) with well-developed scales. Halter pale, paler than scutellum. Legs (as in Fig. 45C): Medium brown, with apical ½ of hind femur pale, hind tibia pale with discrete basal, apical dark brown pigmentation. With only slender setae, lacking scales (except for some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Midleg with thick, subapical setae on each of at least tarsomeres 1–3. Apices of fore-, midleg fifth tarsomeres undivided, with claws slightly subapical to apical (as in Fig. 75F). Claw of foreleg longer than those of mid-, hind leg. Each claw without inner tooth. Anterior claws of each leg without a basal prong. Foreleg claws unequal. Midleg claws equal. Foreleg third tarsomere shorter than fourth tarsomere. Empodia slender. Abdomen (Fig. 77K): Light brown, with posterior margins of tergites 6, 7, segments 8–9 medium brown. Genitalia (Fig. 88D): Gonocoxite uniformly medium brown, gently tapering; anteromedial area with spicules similar in length to those elsewhere on gonocoxite; with well-defined dorsal row of four setae, with setae 1, 2, 3, 4 progressively thicker, with row restricted to dorsal portion of gonocoxite. With one dorsomedial stout seta, tapering from base. Gonostylus (partially extended) basal 2/3 straight, gently curved for apical 1/3, basal half slightly thicker, tapering to apical half of more or less equal thickness, rounded apically; without subbasal seta; apical seta slender, short, simple. Aedeagus slender, elongate, tapering from base, rounded apically, with lateral margins fused subapically.

Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6–11. As for male, with following differences. Head: Coronal suture elongate, extending ventrally past ommatida (as in Fig. 16B). Antenna; with flagellomeres as in Fig. 28A, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1. Clypeus ( Fig. 17 AD) squarish. Mandible with small, pointed teeth. Palpus as in Fig. AF. Wing (Fig. 68G). Legs: Claws of each leg equal to those of others; equal on each leg, simple (without inner teeth). Abdomen: Medium brown with segments 8–9 dark brown. Cercus dark brown.

Immatures. Unknown.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella ugandensis is known from the type locality (Fig. 114) at 1117 m, as well as an unspecified locality in the Rift Valley, in western Uganda. The latter is not shown on the distribution map. Two males (in BMNH) identified as C. picticollis by Freeman (1962) were not reexamined but, based on their distribution in Uganda, likely are actually C. ugandensis .

TAXONOMIC DISCUSSION: Males and females were associated through the shared presence of a shared pigmentation pattern (very similar to that of C. picticollis from western Africa) and were collected together at both Entebbe and in western Uganda.

TYPES: Holotype, male adult on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Corethrella ugandensis Borkent , Uganda, Entebbe , 11–17-?-1972, 3720', H. Falke, CD459" ( CNCI) . Allotype, female adult on microscope slide, labeled as for holotype ( CNCI) . Paratypes: 1 ♂, from type locality ( CNCI) ; 2 ♂, 3 ♀, Rift Valley , western Uganda, VII-1972 ( CNCI) .

DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name ugandensis is proposed to reflect the country of the type locality.
