Corethrella (Corethrella) unisetosa Borkent View in CoL , new species

DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: unknown. Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella in the New World with a pale palpus ( Fig. 11F), plain wing (Fig. 70D), thorax light brown (or yellowish) ( Fig. 51C), the hind tibia with discrete basal and apical dark pigmentation, midfemur light brown with slightly darker pigmentation at its very apex, and the fore coxa and trochanter lighter than those of the hind leg ( Fig. 51C).

DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Unknown.

Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6–11. Head: Outline in anterior view laterally elongate ( Fig. 11F). Coronal suture elongate, extending ventrally past ommatida (as in Fig. 16H). Six large setae on frons between ventromedial area of ommatida (as in Fig. 16H). Antenna medium brown but with flagellomeres 1, basal portion of flagellomeres 2–5 pale; pedicel with at least one distinctive, more elongate, stout, dorsal or dorsolateral seta; flagellomeres as in Fig. 30B, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1; flagellomere 13 with well-developed apical bifurcation. Clypeus ( Fig. 18M) squarish. Mandible with small, pointed teeth. Palpus ( Fig. 34Y) pale; segment 3 somewhat ovoid. Thorax (as in Fig. 51D): Light brown, with following medium brown: stripe from pronotum posterior to anepimeron; dorsal, ventral portions of katepisternum; most of mediotergite; scutellum with darker anteromedial spot. Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with group of about 9 elongate setae. Prescutal suture short, not extending more than half way to dorsocentral row of setae. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum triangular, uniformly brown, with anterodorsal margin thick. Wing (Fig. 70D): Apex of R 2 basal to apex of M 1. Plain, without pattern of pigmented veins and/or scales; veins (other than costa and wing margin) with well-developed scales. Halter light brown, as pigmented as scutellum. Legs (as in Fig. 51D): Pale or light brown with very apex of foretibia, midfemur, lightly pigmented, base and apex of midtibia lightly pigmented; base of hind femur medium brown, ventroapical pigmented patch on hind femur; hind tibia with discrete basal, apical medium brown pigmentation; at least mid-, hind leg tarsomeres 2–4 with banding. With only slender setae, lacking scales (except for some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Midleg with thick, subapical setae on each of at least tarsomeres 1–3. Claws of each leg equal to those of others; equal on each leg, simple (without inner teeth). Empodia slender. Abdomen: Light brown, with sternites 1, 2 somewhat darker. Cercus light brown.

Pupa. Mostly undescribed. Thorax: Scutum, metathorax each with spherical sensory pit (as in Fig. 100A). Respiratory organ (Fig. 102F): Tubular. Abdomen (Fig. 107C): Segments 3–7 not expanded laterally. Paddle only moderately elongate; apicodorsal thick spine articulating; apicoventral seta longer than thick spine.

Larva. Unknown.

Egg. Unknown.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella unisetosa is known only from the type locality at Iquitos, Peru (Fig. 126) at an altitude of 106 m. The single female holotype was reared from a species of Aechmea located in the canopy.

TAXONOMIC DISCUSSION: Corethrella unisetosa is very similar to C. fulva , differing primarily in the pigmentation of the palpus and the presence of only one seta on the clypeus. The associated pupal exuviae, however, differs in a number of details from that of C. fulva described by Lane (1953), especially in its distinctive pigmentation pattern and relative development of setae.

TYPES: Holotype, female adult with pupal exuviae on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Coreth-

rella unisetosa Borkent ”, “ PERU: Loreto, Iquitos, Puerto Almendra   GoogleMaps arboretum 03.83894°S, 73.37455°W, ex. Aechmea sp. in canopy, 29 August 2003, S. Yanoviak ” (CNCI).

DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name unisetosa refers to the single seta present on the clypeus of the female of this species.
