Corethrella (Corethrella) evenhuisi Borkent View in CoL , new species

DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: unknown. Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella in the Oriental, Australasian, and Oceanic Regions with a plain wing (Fig. 72F), veins with only slender setae (lacking scales) (as in Fig. 73C), and a uniformly dark brown thorax ( Fig. 58D).

DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Unknown.

Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6-11. Head: Outline in anterior view nearly circular ( Fig. 14G). Coronal suture elongate, extending ventrally past ommatida (as in Fig. 16B). Two large setae on frons between ventromedial area of ommatida (as in Fig. 16B). Antenna unknown. Clypeus ( Fig. 18 AO) squarish or somewhat wider than long. Mandible with small, pointed teeth. Palpus ( Fig. 35U) brown; segment 3 somewhat swollen at or near midlength; segment 5 missing. Thorax ( Fig. 58D): Uniformly medium to dark brown, with pleura perhaps slightly lighter than scutum, pale sclerites around base of wing. Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with 2 elongate setae situated somewhat lateral to one another. Prescutal suture elongate, interrupted by area of pale cuticle. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum triangular, uniformly brown, with anterodorsal margin not thick. Wing (Fig. 72F): Apex of R 2 equal to apex of M 1. Plain, without pattern of pigmented veins and/or Macrotrichia; veins (other than costa and wing margin) with slender scales. Halter as dark as scutellum. Legs ( Fig. 58D): Uniformly pigmented medium to dark brown. With only slender setae, lacking scales (except for some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Midleg with thick, subapical setae on each of at least tarsomeres 1-3. Claws of each leg equal to those of others; equal on each leg, simple (without inner teeth). Empodia slender. Abdomen: Tergites, sternites uniformly pigmented dark brown. Cercus dark brown.

Immatures. Unknown.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella evenhuisi is known from only from the type locality in Papua New Guinea (Fig. 116A) at an altitude of 1300 m. One paratype was collected with a Malaise trap. The method of collection for the remaining two specimens is unknown .

TAXONOMIC DISCUSSION: The holotype and two paratypes were originally on pins and subsequently placed on microscope slides. All are missing their antennae and fifth palpal segments. Each is missing parts of their legs.

TYPES: Holotype, female adult on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Corethrella evenhuisi Borkent ”, “NE NEW GUINEA: Wau , Big Wau Ck. 1300 m, XI.1965 ”, “ F. Shanahan Collector BISHOP” ( BPBM) . Paratypes: 2 ♀ from type locality but one collected by J. Sedlacek ( BPBM; CNCI) .

DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name evenhuisi is proposed in recognition of the remarkable and voluminous contributions to Dipterology by my friend and colleague Neal L. Evenhuis. Aside from this, he has unstintingly provided advice to me regarding the nuances of the rules of the ICZN for many years. Thanks Neal!
