Corethrella (Corethrella) varia Borkent View in CoL , new species

DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: unknown. Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella in the Oriental, Australasian, and Oceanic Regions with a palpus and clypeus equally dark brown ( Fig. 14F), wing with predominately dark scales and composed of broad subbasal, midlength and apical bands (Fig. 72E), thorax uniformly medium to dark brown, legs uniformly medium to dark brown but with darker band new base of hind tibia ( Fig. 58C), and the abdomen uniformly dark brown.

DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Unknown.

Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6–11. Head: Outline in anterior view laterally somewhat elongate ( Fig. 14F). Coronal suture elongate, extending ventrally past ommatida (as in Fig. 16B). Two large setae on frons between ventromedial area of ommatida (as in Fig. 16B). Antenna uniformly medium brown; pedicel with at least one distinctive, more elongate, stout, dorsal or dorsolateral seta; flagellomeres as in Fig. 32E, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1; flagellomere 13 with well-developed apical bifurcation. Clypeus ( Fig. 18 AN) wide. Mandible with large, triangular teeth. Palpus ( Fig. 35T) brown; segment 3 swollen apically. Thorax ( Fig. 58C): Uniformly medium to dark brown, pale sclerites around base of wing. Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with 2 elongate setae situated somewhat lateral to one another. Prescutal suture elongate, thick, uninterrupted, extending to near dorsocentral row of setae. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum triangular, uniformly brown, with anterodorsal margin not thick. Wing (Fig. 72E): Apex of R 2 equal to apex of M 1. Anterior margin with differently, discretely pigmented scales (indicating anterior margin of wing bands), with basal, midlength, apical bands; veins (other than costa and wing margin) with welldeveloped scales. Halter as dark as scutellum. Legs ( Fig. 58C): Uniformly pigmented medium brown, except for darker pigmentation near base of hind tibia. With only slender setae, lacking scales (except for some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Midleg without thick, subapical setae on tarsomere 1 (2-3 are missing). Claws of fore and hind leg equal, simple (without inner teeth), those of midleg unknown. Empodia slender. Abdomen: Tergites, sternites dark brown. Cercus dark brown.

Immatures. Unknown.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella varia is known only from the type locality in Papua New Guinea (Fig. 115B) at an altitude of 122 m. The method of collection of the single holotype is unknown .

TAXONOMIC DISCUSSION: The single holotype was originally on a pin and subsequently placed on a microscope slide.

TYPES: Holotype, female adult on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Corethrella varia Borkent ”, “NE NEW GUINEA: May River , 6.VI.1963 ”, “ R. Straatman Collector, BISHOP” ( BPBM).

DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name varia (different) recognizes that this is the only species from Papua New Guinea with patterned wings.
