Corethrella (Corethrella) gloma Borkent View in CoL , new species

DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: unknown. Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella with a very short coronal suture (as in Fig. 16C), broad midlength wing band (Fig. 72J), and a dark brown abdomen.

DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Unknown.

Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6–11. Head: Outline in anterior view laterally elongate ( Fig. 15B). Coronal suture absent (as in Fig. 16C). Two large setae on frons between ventromedial area of ommatida (as in Fig. 16C). Antenna medium brown; pedicel with at least one distinctive, more elongate, stout, dorsal or dorsolateral seta; flagellomeres as in Fig. 32H, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1; flagellomere 13 with well-developed apical bifurcation. Clypeus ( Fig. 18 AS) squarish. Mandible with small, pointed teeth. Palpus ( Fig. 35Y) light brown; segment 3 somewhat ovoid, swollen at or near midlength. Thorax ( Fig. 59D): Dark brown, pale sclerites around base of wing). Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with group of about 6 elongate setae. Prescutal suture short, not extending more than half way to dorsocentral row of setae. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum triangular, uniformly brown, with anterodorsal margin thick. Wing (Fig. 72J): Apex of R 2 basal to apex of M 1. Anterior margin with differently, discretely pigmented scales (indicating anterior margin of midlength band), with midlength band, some darker scales basal to midlength band along C, Sc, R 1, Rs, M; veins (other than costa and wing margin) with well-developed scales. Halter as dark as scutellum. Legs ( Fig. 59D): Dark brown, with apical 1/3 of hind femur, basal 0.8 of hind tibia pale or light brown (base of hind tibia with very slightly darker pigmentation). With only slender setae, lacking scales (except for some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Midleg with thick, subapical setae on each of at least tarsomeres 1–3. Claws of each leg equal to those of others; equal on each leg, simple (without inner teeth). Empodia slender. Abdomen: Segments 1–7 medium brown, segments 8, 9 dark brown. Cercus medium brown.

Immatures. Unknown.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella gloma is known from the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica (Fig. 127) and from the Canal Zone in Panama at altitudes of 27–180 m. The single holotype was collected with an ABC trap using light and octenol. The paratype was collected with a simple light trap .

TYPES: Holotype, female adult on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Corethrella gloma Borkent ”, “ Costa Rica, Prov. Puntarenas, Osa, Sierpe, ACOSA, P.N. Corcovado Estación Los Planes, 180 m, 23–24- Julio-2002, G. Chaverri, Trampa ABC-octenol-Luz, LS287300/499100, #70618” ( INBC); 1 ♀ paratype, Gamboa, Canal Zone, Panama, VII-1967 ( USNM).

DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name gloma (ball) refers to the globular shape of flagellomere 2 of the female of this species.
