Type material

Holotype. Brazil, Amazonas State , Barcelos Municipality , Serra do Aracá, Igarapé (1st and 2nd order) [0.86060 ◦ N, 63.47199 ◦ W], 32 m, 01.VIII.2009, (J.L. Nessimian, U.G. Neiss and J.O. Silva): 1 m ( DZRJ), brachypterous. GoogleMaps

Description of holotype (brachypterous form)

Measurements. Body length (from apex of head to apex of hemelytra at rest): 5.20; length of vertex: 0.36; greatest width of vertex: 0.26; width of eye: 0.62; length of ocular commissure: 0.26; length of head: 0.68; greatest width of head: 1.26; length of pronotum: 0.46; greatest width of pronotum: 1.34; median length of scutellum: 0.60; greatest width of scutellum: 0.70.

Colour. General colour yellowish. Setae dark-brown. Base of tylus, labrum, first and second rostral segments brown; ventral surface of second rostral segment, third and fourth rostral segments dark brown. Posterior half of fovea on pronotum stained with brown; hemelytra hyaline and yellowish; median longitudinal stripe opaque, narrow, not bifurcate, extending for about one-third of hemelytra length; narrow brown stain, covering entire stripe, extending posteriorly for four-fifths of hemelytra length; second stripe on costal margin extending to approximately one-half of hemelytra length; large brown stain, covering entire stripe, extending posteriorly onto entire hemelytra ( Figure 1A View Figures 1–4 ); embolium stained with brown; fore-, meso- and hind trochanters, as well as foretibiae and foretarsi yellowish, stained with brown; femora yellowish with brown stain ventrally; mesotibiae and tarsi brown; hind tibiae and tarsi yellowish; lateral margins of metaxyphus brown.

Head, thorax and abdomen. Head rounded; anterior margin of vertex convex, slightly protruding before eyes, shorter than its length; ocular commissure shorter than vertex, about two-fifths width of one eye. Pronotum with lateral margins conspicuously divergent; posterior margin slightly concave to approximately straight; greatest pronotum width about three times its length in dorsal view; lateral margins of scutellum concave, wider than long and longer than median length of pronotum; internal margin of embolium without toothed area; hemelytral process extending beyond apex of membrane ( Figure 1A View Figures 1–4 ); forefemora without spines; mesotrochanters rounded with one group of very cohesive, short bristles near lateral margin ( Figure 1B View Figures 1–4 ); mesofemora without nodules; metaxyphus with apex trilobed; distal margin of hind trochanters continuous, without sharp concavity; hind femora with 13 strong setae distributed throughout inner margins. Ventral abdominal keel with hairs distributed throughout entire lateral surface.

(lateral view) showing right clasper; (D) male genital capsule (lateral view) showing left clasper. Figure 2 View Figures 1–4 . Martarega nieseri Barbosa, Ribeiro, Nessimian sp. nov. (A) Male hemelytra (lateral view); (B) female hemelytra (lateral view); (C) apex of male hind trochanter with a sharp concavity; (D) male genital capsule (lateral view) showing right clasper; (E) male genital capsule (lateral view) showing left clasper. Figure 3 View Figures 1–4 . Martarega pydanieli Barbosa, Ribeiro, Nessimian sp. nov. (holotype). (A) Male hemelytra (lateral view); (B) male mesotrochanter with lateral margin angulous to straight; (C) male genital capsule (lateral view) showing right clasper; (D) male genital capsule (lateral view) showing left clasper. Figure 4 View Figures 1–4 . Martarega membranacea White, 1879 . (A) Male hemelytra (lateral view); (B) female hemelytra (lateral view); (C) male genitalia capsule (lateral view) showing right clasper; (D) male genitalia capsule (lateral view) showing left clasper. ASP, asymmetrical sinistral process; HPR, hemelytral process; LCA, longitudinal carina; LCL, left clasper; LMS, longitudinal median stripe; LSC, longitudinal costal stripe; RCL, right clasper; SBR, short bristles; SCO, sharp concavity; STA, brown stain; STH, stripe originating at base of hemelytral process; TAE, toothed area of embolium. Scale bar: 1.00 mm. Male genitalia. Genital capsule normal, not produced; left clasper rounded at apex, longer than right, twice its width, with longitudinal carina along its almost entire length; right clasper rounded ( Figure 1C,D View Figures 1–4 ).

Macropterous forms unknown. Females of this species are unknown.

Etymology

The species epithet, barcelos , refers to the locality (Barcelos Municipality) in which the holotype was collected.

Taxonomic notes

The specimens of M. barcelos sp. nov. key to M. williamsi in the Truxal (1949) key to Martarega species. This is because M. barcelos sp. nov. appears most closely related to M. williamsi , sharing with the latter the pattern of hemelytral stripes, with a short longitudinal median stripe and a second stripe at costal margin, and the presence of a group of short bristles near the outer lateral margin of mesotrochanter (compare Figures 1 View Figures 1–4 and 9 View Figures 9–12 ). Martarega barcelos sp. nov. has many differences in relation to M. williamsi : spines at forefemur absent; hemelytral process exceeding the length of membrane ( Figure 1A View Figures 1–4 ); first longitudinal stripe equal to M. williamsi , except the stain covering the stripe and extending for four-fifths of hemelytra length; second stripe at costal margin extending for approximately one-half of hemelytra length, with a stain about it and extending along the entire length of hemelytra ( Figure 1A View Figures 1–4 ); right clasper more rounded; left clasper more robust with a longitudinal carina along its length ( Figure 1C,D View Figures 1–4 ).
