Anthophora maculifrons Cresson, 1879: 210 View in CoL (lectotype ( Cresson, 1916): ♀; Nevada, USA; coll. Morrison; ANSP, 2274).

Diagnosis. Males may be determined by the following character combination: galea strongly tessellate, dull; clypeus typically with inverted-T maculation, although upper half frequently weak or absent ( Fig. 51B View FIGURE 51 ); supraclypeus with transverse, often somewhat amorphous, maculation; T2–T6 with well-defined apical appressed setal bands; T7 with slight medial longitudinal carina, lateral projections with tips relatively blunt and only slightly recurved posteriorly, medial projections long with tips rounded ( Fig. 61B View FIGURE 61 ); S5 with dense, light erect setal patches ( Fig. 38B View FIGURE 38 ); and S6 with transparent apical rim medially ( Fig. 38B View FIGURE 38 ). Females may be determined with the following character combination: galea strongly tessellate, dull; clypeus typically with inverted-T maculation, although upper half may be weak or absent ( Fig. 41B View FIGURE 41 ); supraclypeus with strong transverse maculation, filling most of area; terga shiny between punctures; T2–T4 typically with well-defined apical appressed setal bands, though some species with wider bands have almost no basal black zone; and anal fimbria dark brown, often partially obscured by light setae dorsally.

Male description. Head: Facial maculations usually pale yellow, uncommonly richly yellow. Galea roughly reaching foretrochanter in repose, barely exceeding its front margin if at all; medium to dark brown; strongly tessellate, with weak reflections if any. Mandible with inferior tooth unusually expanded and broadly ovular, running about parallel to main blade; maculated from base to start or middle of inferior tooth ( Fig. 51B View FIGURE 51 ). Labral rim tridentate. Clypeal maculation varying from band to inverted-T, very nearly reaching lateral sides, filling about half of clypeal height if not inverted-T ( Fig. 51B View FIGURE 51 ); punctation moderately to weakly sparser within maculation than without. Paraocular area immaculate. Supraclypeal area maculated; usually transverse, sometimes amorphous. Scape maculated; fully along length and most of width below. Mesosoma: Scutum shiny; with impunctate areas, sometimes small or obscure due to invasion by sparse punctures. Tegula translucent to weakly transparent, medium to light brown. Basitibial plate weak but present; weakly outlined, often obscured by setae. Metasoma: T1 covered in appressed setae; T2–T6 with thinner apical appressed setal bands, not or very weakly undulate. Terga moderately to weakly tessellate between punctures, with relatively weak reflections; apparent through appressed setae only where sparse. Tergal rims transparent, slightly tan to clear. Male T7 ( Fig. 61B View FIGURE 61 ) with very weak medial longitudinal carina, sometimes only distinct near base of carina; lateral projections somewhat recurved, wide flanges; medial projections long and apically rounded, sides of each parallel. Male S5 ( Fig. 38B View FIGURE 38 ) with dense and light erect setal patches. Male S6 ( Fig. 38B View FIGURE 38 ) medially emarginate and slightly filled by transparent integument from which long setae arise. Male S7 ( Fig. 66B View FIGURE 66 ) with setae fully banding S7 around midpoint of length; widening from midpoint to tip, apical half widest clearly before rounded lateral tips; apical half vaguely ovular, rim rounded outward, with slight medial bump. Male S8 ( Fig. 71B View FIGURE 71 ) lateral projections distinct; medial projection nearly parallel-sided, apically emarginate. Male genital capsule ( Fig. 76B View FIGURE 76 ) with outer corners, where gonocoxite tips curve inward, marked by obvious flange of about 90 degrees or greater, best seen in profile; from corner to apex, in profile, gonocoxite with low secondary bump but relatively unmodified overall; tip, in profile, pointed and abruptly bent ventrally; gonostylus tip position slightly exceeding that of gonocoxite, measured from above along primary axis of latter. Pubescence: See Fig. 56B View FIGURE 56 . Appears medium to dark gray overall, often somewhat brownish. Setae generally somewhat tan dorsally except on metasoma, whiter there and elsewhere toward venter, except as follows: leg inner faces orange; tergal basal zones dark.

Female similar to male, except: Head: Mandible with inferior tooth ridge-like but expanded, slightly angled off main blade ( Fig. 41B View FIGURE 41 ). Labral rim rounded; fully maculated. Clypeal maculation similarly variable but typically stronger ( Fig. 41B View FIGURE 41 ). Scape immaculate. Mesosoma: Midtibial spur apically curved; tan to orange. Basitibial plate circular distally, teardropped overall. Metasoma: T1 covered in appressed setae; T2–T4 with appressed setal bands of variable thickness, sometimes only absent in very narrow basal zones, usually undulate; T5 with extensive appressed setae. T4 impunctate rim of short to almost moderate length medially, distinct but weak. Anal fimbria triangular or vaguely so, filling around third to under half of T5 length medially. Pubescence: See Fig. 46B View FIGURE 46 . Hindbasitarsal brush dark brown; anal fimbria usually orangish, sometimes invaded posteriorly by brown; S5 with dark apicomedially, hidden by light.

Distribution. See Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 . Present in: USA: California, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, likely Montana, possibly Washington; Mexico: possibly Baja California Norte. Found throughout much of west, montane in hotter areas, occupying broader range of environments in colder areas. Ecoregional habitance is as follows, based on 352 specimen records: 16 ecoregions total: Mojave Desert (116=33%), Great Basin shrub steppe (65=18.5%), Colorado Plateau shrublands (41=11.6%), Eastern Cascades forests (27=7.7%), Sierra Nevada forests (26=7.4%), Wyoming Basin shrub steppe (23=6.5%), Snake-Columbia shrub steppe (17=4.8%), Wasatch and Uinta montane forests (12=3.4%), Colorado Rockies forests (8=2.3%), California montane chaparral and woodlands (5=1.4%), Blue Mountains forests (5=1.4%), Arizona Mountains forests (2≤1%), Central and Southern Cascades forests (2≤1%), Sonoran Desert (1≤1%), California coastal sage and chaparral (1≤1%), Klamath- Siskiyou forests (1≤1%).

Phenology. Recorded from April–October, almost exclusively late summer to fall, most common in August– September. Likely univoltine, possibly emerging opportunistically on rare occasions.

Nesting biology. Unknown.

Floral specialization. Reported as a specialist on Chrysothamnus (Asteraceae) ( Moldenke & Neff 1974). Appears mostly true; known associations suggest specialization on Chrysothamnus and Ericameria as well as other fall flowering shrubs in Asteraceae . Primary recorded visits by 131 females include: Family Asteraceae (98%); Genus Ericameria (38%), Chrysothamnus (35%), Gutierrezia (23%); Species Ericameria nauseosa (34%). 190 total floral records from three families include: Asteraceae (58 ♂ 128 ♀): Aster sp. 1 ♀, Centaurea sp. 1 ♂, Chrysothamnus nauseosus 1 ♀, Chrysothamnus sp. 14 ♂ 41 ♀, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus 5 ♂ 3 ♀, Ericameria nauseosa 25 ♂ 48 ♀, Ericameria sp. 6 ♂ 2 ♀, Grindelia squarrosa 1 ♂, Gutierrezia microcephala 12 ♀, Gutierrezia sarothrae 1 ♂ 11 ♀, Gutierrezia sp. 1 ♂ 8 ♀, Helianthus sp. 1 ♂, Machaeranthera canescens 1 ♀, Machaeranthera pinnatifida 1 ♂, Vanclevea stylosa 2 ♂, Orobanchaceae (1 ♀): Cordylanthus sp. 1 ♀, Polygonaceae (1 ♂ 2 ♀): Eriogonum effusum 1 ♀, Eriogonum nummulare 1 ♀, Eriogonum trichopes 1 ♂.
