Diagnosis. This species is unusually distinctive. Males are immediately identifiable by any of the following: forebasitarsus spindly and with black and white tufts, mid leg tarsal segments all elongated, tibial spurs apically pointed and inner hind spur medially bent, and hindbasitarsus irregularly enlarged and vaguely triangular (most visible in Figs. 49B View FIGURE 49 , 54B View FIGURE 54 ). Females are immediately identifiable by the opaque dark brown, apically pointed tibial spurs on the mid and hindlegs. Females may be otherwise determined by the following character combination: galea tessellate, dull; mandible with inferior tooth large, vaguely triangular, clearly angled off main blade ( Fig. 39B View FIGURE 39 ); clypeal maculation an inverted-T, uncommonly interrupted above ( Fig. 39B View FIGURE 39 ); supraclypeus strongly maculated, either trapezoidal or a widened pentagon; scutum shiny, with impunctate areas; and S5 with dark setae apically.

Male description. Head: Facial maculations richly to pale yellow. Labral rim tridentate. Galea reaching rear of foretrochanter or nearly so in repose; medium to dark brown; usually strongly but sometimes moderately tessellate, with weak reflections. Mandible with inferior tooth large and triangular, clearly angled off main blade; maculated from base to near start of inferior tooth ( Fig. 49B View FIGURE 49 ). Labral rim rounded; fully maculated. Clypeal maculation an inverted-T with slight depression to each side of medial upward-projecting line, reaching lateral sides, almost always reaching top medially ( Fig. 49B View FIGURE 49 ); punctation only slightly sparser within maculation, near rim, than without. Paraocular area immaculate. Supraclypeal area strongly maculated; usually entirely filled. Scape maculated; fully along length and width below. Mesosoma: Scutum shiny; with distinct impunctate areas. Tegula transparent to slightly translucent, yellowish to light brown. Foreleg femur and tarsi elongate, basitarsus sinuate and spindly; basitarsus with unusual sculpted inner face and intricate setal tufts of white and black ( Figs. 49B View FIGURE 49 , 54B View FIGURE 54 ). Midleg more elongate: femur roughly equally so, basitarsus and especially other tarsi proportionally longer compared to foreleg ( Fig. 54B View FIGURE 54 ). Hindleg only slightly elongate, mostly in tibia and basitarsus; femur, tibia, and basitarsus swollen, latter two seemingly forming clasping mechanism in conjunction ( Fig. 54B View FIGURE 54 ); with unusually thick and long setae on inner faces. Basitibial plate absent; slight bump may be present anteriorly. Metasoma: T1 usually covered in appressed setae, sometimes with apical appressed setal band; T2–T4 with apical appressed setal bands, variable in thickness and often undulate; T5–T6 with or without apical appressed setal bands. Terga weakly to moderately tessellate between punctures, usually still with moderate reflections; sometimes still apparent through appressed setae. Tergal rims transparent, clear to slightly tan. Male T7 ( Fig. 59B View FIGURE 59 ) without medial longitudinal carina; lateral projections only weakly recurved, blunt flanges; medial projections long and knife-like, the space between them usually filled by setae. Male S5 resembling Fig. 38D View FIGURE 38 , with dense and dark erect setal patches, but denser medially. Male S6 resembling Fig. 38B View FIGURE 38 , clearly medially emarginate with slight transparent integument near base, but with more transparent integument anteriorly and less setae covering rim. Male S7 ( Fig. 64B View FIGURE 64 ) with setae restricted to sides around midpoint of length; widening from midpoint to tip, apical half widest near rounded lateral tips; apical half vaguely heart-shaped, rim rounded outward, with narrow medial emargination. Male S8 ( Fig. 69B View FIGURE 69 ) lateral projections absent; medial projection narrowing to tip, where rounded at narrow medial point. Male genital capsule ( Fig. 74B View FIGURE 74 ) with outer corners, where gonocoxite tips curve inward, nearly absent small bump, best seen in profile; from corner to apex, in profile, gonocoxite with low bump somewhat hidden to interior; tip, in profile, rounded and weakly curved ventrally; gonostylus tip position significantly exceeding that of gonocoxite, measured from above along primary axis of latter. Pubescence: See Fig. 54B View FIGURE 54 . Appears light to medium gray or overall, scutum sometimes tan. Setae white to off-white, though sometimes tan dorsally, except as follows: vertex and scutum only very rarely with any dark intermixing; legs highly variable, but tibia nearly always white; leg inner faces dark brown to black; tergal basal zones dark when present; T5–T6 with or without appressed setae; S5 thick patches always dark brownish.

Female similar to male, except: Head: Facial maculations yellow to off-white, sometimes yellow-green. Labrum rim rounded; fully maculated. Clypeal maculation with upward-directed portion of inverted-T thinner ( Fig. 39B View FIGURE 39 ). Scape immaculate. Mesosoma: Legs unmodified in length. Midtibial spur apically pointed; unusually opaque, brown. Basitibial plate circular distally, teardropped overall. Metasoma: T1 covered in appressed setae; T2–T4 usually with apical appressed setal bands undulate, but highly variable in width, sometimes nearly covering terga but sometimes reduced to half; T5 with or without appressed setae. T4 impunctate rim of short length medially, often only slightly visible. Anal fimbria strongly triangular, covering from nearly half to over half of T5 length medially. Pubescence: See Fig. 44B View FIGURE 44 . Leg inner faces brown; hindbasitarsal brush dark brown to blackish; tergal bands usually thicker; anal fimbria dark brown to blackish or light and whitish east of Colorado’s Front Range; sterna light or dark.

Distribution. See Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 . Present in USA: Utah, California, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico, Arizona, Washington, likely Montana; Mexico: Baja California Norte, possibly Sonora; possibly Canada: possibly British Columbia. Found throughout much of the West, montane in hotter areas, occupying broader range of environments in colder areas. Ecoregional habitance is as follows, based on 1325 specimen records: 16 ecoregions total: Colorado Plateau shrublands (745=56.2%), Great Basin shrub steppe (259=19.5%), Sierra Nevada Forests (143=10.8%), Snake-Columbia shrub steppe (79=6%), Wyoming Basin shrub steppe (38=2.9%), Great Basin montane forests (13=1%), Colorado Rockies forests (12≤≤1%), California montane chaparral and woodlands (9≤≤1%), Wasatch and Uinta montane forests (9≤≤1%), Mojave Desert (6≤≤1%), California coastal sage and chaparral (3≤≤1%), Eastern Cascades forests (3≤1%), Sierra Juarez and San Pedro Martir pine-oak forest (2≤≤1%), South Central Rockies forests (2≤≤1%), Klamath-Siskiyou forests (1≤≤1%), Western short grasslands (1≤≤1%).

Phenology. Recorded from May–October, heavily dependent on elevation and region, generally flies earlier in warmer regions. Univoltine at higher elevations, potentially bivoltine lower.

Nesting biology. Torchio (1968) described the nesting biology of A. albata . This species nests in both horizontal, unconsolidated sand and in vertical sandstone banks. The use of sandstone nests by A. albata has been confirmed by the preservation of specimens within nest cells, but whether or not this species excavated these nests is unclear. Although Torchio (1968) claims that this species was witnessed excavating the sandstone nests, he collected both A. albata and A. peritomae from the site, and the latter is confirmed as a minimally facultative excavator of sandstone nests ( Orr et al. 2016). Further, he marked many of the nest cells collected from that site as “flexipes or peritomae,” despite no mention of A. peritomae anywhere in his paper.

Floral specialization. Likely a specialist on Asteraceae , with great breadth, but possibly generalist with strong Asteraceae preference or, less likely, an eclectic specialist on Asteraceae and Cleomaceae ( Cane & Sipes 2006) . Pure Asteraceae loads were quite common among pollen views (11/15), remaining views also with non-negligible proportions of what was likely Cleomaceae pollen, two nearly purely so and two with <50%. Primary recorded visits by 279 females include: Family Asteraceae (61%), Cleomaceae (10%). 423 total floral records from 14 families include: Asteraceae (97 ♂ 169 ♀): Aster chilensis 1 ♂ 1 ♀, Aster falcatus 7 ♂, Aster sp. 2 ♂ 5 ♀, Asteraceae sp. 1 ♂, Asteraceae sp. 2 ♂, Asteraceae sp. 3 ♀, Chaenactis sp. 3 ♂ 12 ♀, Chrysothamnus depressus 1 ♀, Chrysothamnus linifolius 1 ♀, Chrysothamnus sp. 1 ♂ 16 ♀, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus 1 ♀, Ericameria nauseosa 5 ♂ 6 ♀, Ericameria parryi 1 ♀, Erigeron bellidiastrum 1 ♂, Erigeron sp. 2 ♂ 2 ♀, Erigeron sp. 4 ♂, Grindelia sp. 2 ♀, Grindelia squarrosa 4 ♂ 6 ♀, Haplopappus nuttallii 1 ♀, Helianthus annuus 3 ♂ 7 ♀, Heterotheca villosa 27 ♂ 21 ♀, Hymenopappus filifolius 19 ♀, Machaeranthera canescens 6 ♂ 8 ♀, Machaeranthera tanacetifolia 6 ♂ 4 ♀, Malacothrix sonchoides 1 ♂ 7 ♀, Orochaenactis thysanocarpha 8 ♂ 11 ♀, Senecio douglasii 4 ♂ 5 ♀, Senecio sp. 1 ♂ 1 ♀, Senecio spartioides 1 ♂ 2 ♀, Stephanomeria exigua 5 ♀, Stephanomeria sp. 6 ♂ 12 ♀, Stephanomeria tenuifolia 1 ♂ 3 ♀, Symphyotrichum lanceolatum 5 ♀, Vanclevea stylosa 1 ♀, Boraginaceae (5 ♂ 10 ♀): Cryptantha sp. 8 ♀, Phacelia leucophylla 3 ♂, Phacelia rafaelensis 1 ♀, Phacelia sp. 2 ♂ 1 ♀, Brassicaceae (1 ♀): Thelypodium integrifolium 1 ♀, Cleomaceae (5 ♂ 28 ♀): Cleome lutea 4 ♂ 18 ♀, Cleome serrulata 1 ♂ 5 ♀, Cleome sp. 1 ♀, Cleomella sp. 4 ♀, Crassulaceae (1 ♀): Sedum lanceolatum 1 ♀, Fabaceae (8 ♂ 16 ♀): Lupinus sp. 1 ♀, Medicago sp. 1 ♂, Melilotus alba 1 ♀, Polemoniaceae sp. 6 ♂ 4 ♀, Psoralea lanceolata 1 ♂ 10 ♀, Lamiaceae (14 ♂ 17 ♀): Hedeoma drummondii 2 ♂, Monardella sp. 1 ♀, Poliomintha incana 11 ♂ 11 ♀, Poliomintha sp. 1 ♀, Salvia sp. 1 ♂ 4 ♀, Malvaceae (2 ♀): Sphaeralcea coccinea 2 ♀, Onagraceae (2 ♀): Oenothera sp. 2 ♀, Plantaginaceae (1 ♂ 1 ♀): Penstemon laricifolius 1 ♂, Penstemon strictus 1 ♀, Polemoniaceae (5 ♂ 18 ♀): Gilia congesta 2 ♀, Gilia leptomeria 1 ♂ 5 ♀, Gilia sp. 4 ♂ 11 ♀, Polygonaceae (6 ♂ 11 ♀): Eriogonum corymbosum 2 ♂ 4 ♀, Eriogonum leptocladon 2 ♂, Eriogonum nummulare 2 ♀, Eriogonum racemosum 1 ♂, Eriogonum sp. 5 ♀, Polygonum sp. 1 ♂, Tamaricaceae (1 ♂ 2 ♀): Tamarix chinensis 1 ♂ 2 ♀, Verbenaceae (3 ♂): Verbena bracteata 3 ♂.

Comments. Two names, A. arthuri and A. flexipes , are here synonymized with A. albata . The female type of A. arthuri is only notable for its slightly smaller size, lighter setal color in the anal fimbria, and the color of the tibial spurs ( Cockerell 1906). All three of these characters vary within some species of A. ( Micranthophora ). Cockerell (1906) himself stated “it may be that this is only a variety of albata ,” and the authors here agree and formally synonymize A. arthuri to the senior synonym A. albata . The status of A. flexipes is more problematic. The more western A. flexipes has been distinguished from the more eastern A. albata , in which the terga are covered in appressed setae, including T5, solely on the basis of the reduced amount of appressed pubescence: only apical bands on T1-T4 and none on T5. Numerous exceptions to this have been found in the Sierra Nevada, where some individuals have appressed setae on T5, and the size of the apical bands varies significantly. Further, COI evidence suggests they are the same species ( A. albata from Colorado versus A. flexipes from California have only 1.5% sequence differentiation). Consequently, A. flexipes is also formally synonymized with the senior A. albata .
