Revision of the Mediterranean Harmothoe and L agisca 1923 IG. 17. Harmothoe gilchristi ((A) Calypso 1964 , St. 37; (B -D) Urania CS 96 St. 243, SMF 8542/1). (A) Anterior end; right palp and styles of median antenna, of dorsal tentacular cirri, and of dorsal cirri from chaetiger 3 missing; dorsal view; (B) right middle elytron; (C) detail of posterior margin of same; (D) style of dorsal cirrus (scales 5 1 mm for A, B; 100 M m for C; 500 M m for D).

club-shaped towards posterior margin. Dorsal and ventral tentacular cirri and dorsal cirri papillate, tapering.

Description. Prostomium bilobed, with distinct cephalic peaks; median antenna with large ceratophore in anterior notch, style papillate, tapering, pigmented basally and with a pigmented band distally; lateral antennae with small ceratophores inserted ventrally and with short, papillate, tapering styles, each pigmented basally and with

pigmented band distally; palps papillate, about as long as median antenna and tentacular cirri; anterior pair of eyes dorsolaterally on widest part of prostomium, posterior pair dorsally near hind margin. Tentaculophores inserted laterally to prostomium, each with two chaetae and a pair of papillate, tapering dorsal and ventral tentacular cirri, each pigmented basally and with two pigmented bands distally. Second segment with fi rst pair of elytra, biramous parapodia, and long ventral buccal cirri, similar to tentacular cirri (fi gure 17A).

Fifteen pairs of elytra; elytral margin with fringing papillae; surface covered by few scattered papillae and rounded conical microtubercles in anterior part, becoming gradually larger and club-shaped towards posterior margin; pigmentation mottled, brownish in alcohol (fi gure 17B, C). Styles of dorsal cirri papillate, tapering and extending beyond neurochaetae, each pigmented basally and with two pigmented bands distally (fi gure 17D); styles of ventral cirri papillate, tapering, shorter than neuropodia.

Parapodia biramous, both rami with single aciculum penetrating epidermis; notopodia with short, rounded presetal and longer, pointed postsetal acicular lobe, neuropodia with subconical presetal acicular lobe with digitiform supra-acicular process and shorter rounded postsetal lobe. Notochaetae stouter than neurochaetae, 1924 with distinct rows of spines and blunt tips; neurochaetae with distinct rows of spines
