Range:— Southern Florida; West Indies; southern Mexico to Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, PA, SC), Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina; Australia, New Caledonia, Malesia.

Ecology:— Locally common; terrestrial in humid forests, usually along rivers and streams or in swampy places, in humid habitats; also a pioneer after disturbance ( Urquhart 2009); to 700(–1400) m; during dry spells, the pinnae may abscise, leaving bare rachises.
