Lanceola pacifica Stebbing, 1888 View in CoL

Southwest Atlantic: 259243, 5/235, [59.108°S 68.017°W], 1830 m. Southeast Pacific: 1090238, 10/868, [57°01’S 78°46’W], 997–1230 m.

Remarks: A relatively common species recorded from all the world’s oceans, except the Mediterranean Sea, with a preference for warmer waters. Juveniles tend to be found in relatively shallower waters (100–200 m) while adults are more often found in deeper waters to 3000–4000 m and even deeper ( Vinogradov et al. 1982 /96). Previously the most southerly record was from the south-west Pacific (46°43’S) (Zeidler 2009) and Zeidler and De Broyer (2009) indicated that it might eventually be found in the Southern Ocean. Thus, the above are the first records for the Southwest Atlantic and Southeast Pacific Sectors. Its occurrence there may be because of the incursion of warm water as it is at the extreme southern range of the sub-Antarctic Zone.
