Type host and locality: Bigeye snapper, Lutjanus lutjanus Bloch (Lutjanidae) : off Hainan Island, South China Sea.
Site of infection: Gills.
Specimens studied: 18 voucher specimens (from L. vitta ), USNPC 101349, 101350, 101351, 101352, BMNH 2008.11.19.38-39, MNHN HEL 60 (Th169), JNC 2306 (Th167-167 bis-168-168 bis); 2 voucher specimens (from L. russellii ), USNPC 101347, MNHN JNC 1584 (Th166); 1 voucher specimen (from L. fulvus ), USNPC 101346; 3 voucher specimens (from L. quinquelineatus ), USNPC 101348, MNHN JNC 1588 (Th166 bis).
Previous records (as Haliotrema longitubocirrus ): Lutjanus lutjanus : off Hainan Island, South China Sea ( Bychowsky & Nagibina 1971). Lutjanus vitta : off Hainan Island, South China Sea ( Bychowsky & Nagibina 1971).
Redescription: Greatest width of body usually at level of gonads. Cephalic lobes moderately developed. Eyespots with lenses; lenses of anterior pair smaller, often obscured by chromatic granules. Pharynx subovate. Testis subspherical to ovate; seminal vesicle inconspicuous. MCO comprising proximal saucer-shaped base, proximal portion of tubular shaft a loose clockwise coil of slightly more than 1 ring, distal portion of shaft straight with angular bend forming elongate tip with delicate flange. Large prostatic reservoir lying anterior to base of MCO on left side of trunk. Germarium generally pyriform to bilobed. Vaginal pore within whorl of tissue at level of MCO; seminal vestibule large, extending to body midline; vaginal canal, seminal receptacle inconspicuous. Ventral anchor with elongate roots, slightly curved shaft, recurved point; distal shaft and point with delicate superficial grooves. Dorsal anchor with elongate superficial root, inconspicuous deep root, slightly curved robust shaft, straight point; distal shaft and point superficially grooved. Ventral bar with small anteromedial flap having two bilateral pockets; dorsal bar rod-shaped, bent at midlength to form wide V, ends slightly recurved posteriorly. Hook distribution typical.
Measurements: Table 4.
Remarks: This species was originally described from the gills of L. lutjanus and L. vitta from the South China Sea as Haliotrema longitubocirrus by Bychowsky & Nagibina (1971). It is transferred to Haliotrematoides as H. longitubocirrus ( Bychowsky & Nagibina, 1971) n. comb. based on the morphology of its haptoral armament, internal anatomy and hook distribution. The saucer-shaped base of the MCO suggests that H. longitubocirrus belongs to a subgroup within the genus that includes H. patellacirrus and H. lanx . Although a likely symplesiomorphic feature, the absence of an inner blade in the anchors suggests that H. longitubocirrus is closest to H. patellacirrus , from which it differs by having a smaller base and a longer shaft of the MCO. It differs from H. lanx by lacking the inner blades of the anchors (present in H. lanx ).
Although never common, H. longitubocirrus has a comparatively low host specificity. It has been recorded on the gills of two species of Lutjanus ( L. vitta and L. lutjanus ) in the South China Sea and four species of Lutjanus (including L. vitta ) from New Caledonia. The reported occurrences of H. longitubocirrus on L. russellii , L. fulvus and L. quinquelineatus off New Caledonia represent new host and locality records for the helminth, and its presence on L. vitta off New Caledonia is a new locality record for the species on this host.
