Coenosia gibbinsi ( Emden, 1940: 227) View in CoL
Holotype male seen; in good condition, abdomen in a microvial pinned with the specimen.
Diagnosis. General colour brown with grey pollinosity on scutum, pleura and abdomen; scutum with five narrow brown vittae; frons, face and parafacial strikingly silver in male; frons slightly diverging to vertex; arista short-haired basad and bare apicad; palpus brown; haltere yellow; scutellum with four strong setae and with only one pair of subbasal setulae; anterior katepisternal of medium size; lower calypter projecting well beyond the upper one; legs shining brown; hind tibia with an anterior and an anterodorsal seta inserted at the same level, the anterodorsal a little shorter, and submedian posterodorsal seta absent.
Notes. Included in the niveifrons group. The comment above under C. argentipes also applies to this species: the frons is slightly dilated towards vertex, and is not “distinctly dilated from first frontal seta to vertex” as is stated in the key to reach the niveifrons group. The holotype has a species name label bearing an unpublished manuscript name. Apparently Emden changed his mind and decided to give the species another name. We have added a new label, C. gibbinsi , to the holotype. Only one paratype, without abdomen.
