Family Leucosiidae Samouelle, 1819 View in CoL

Remarks. The family is rather diverse, embracing nearly 500 extant species and more than 100 species known exclusively as fossils (Ng et al. 2008; De Grave et al. 2009; Schweitzer et al. 2010). There are at least nine extinct genera with unknown affinities to extant taxa not assigned to a particular subfamily. Most of them were erected well before the major revisions of extant leucosiid crabs published in the last 15 years (e.g. Galil 2001a, b, 2003a, b, 2005a, b, 2006a, b, 2009), and hence the fossil record of leucosiid crabs is in a need of re-evaluation in light of the current state of research.
