Material examined. 4 specimens, 217–298 mm SL: MOVI 38728-38729 View Materials (2, 261– 298 mm), E-0520; MOVI 38732 View Materials (1, 277 mm), E-0537; MOVI 38810 View Materials (1, 217 mm), E-0552 .

Diagnosis. Head depth less than 60% of head length; spines on top and sides of head well developed; frontal spine above eye present; 40 or more lateral line scales to level of anus.

Distribution. Tropical and subtropical areas of all oceans, at depths from 1000 to 5055 m ( Nielsen et al. 1999).

Remarks. First record in Brazilian waters. Collected off Bahia and Espírito Santo, from 1522 to 2271 m depth.
