Diagnosis. As for genus.

Distribution. Atlantic Ocean, at depths from 960 to 3535 m ( Séret & Andreata 1992; Nielsen et al. 1999).

Remarks. Collected from several stations off Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, from 984 to 1699 m depth. Previously reported in Brazilian waters by Séret (1988) and Séret & Andreata (1992) off Espírito Santo, 960–1320 m depth. Erroneously named as Penopus microcephalus by Nielsen et al. (1999).
