Basionym: Saccolabium obliquum Lindl. , Gen . Sp. Orchid. Pl.: 223, 1833. Type:— MYANMAR. Mandalay Region: Kyaukse District, 1826, Wallich, Numer. List: no. 7304 (holotype: K-LINDL; isotype: K-W; icon. K).

Heterotypic synonym: Gastrochilus suavis Seidenf., Opera Bot. 95: 298, 1988.

MANDALAY. Kyaukse District: type. SHAN. Kyaukme District, 715 m, 12 Nov 2017, Armstrong et al. 3077 (NY); Taunggyi District: fide Nyan Tun (2014: 293; as G. suavis ). WITHOUT LOCALITY. McMillen 144 ( US); Ohtsuka & Hashimoto s.n. (TI), ident. uncertain (as G. dasypogon ).

Distribution:— The central Himalayas, northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina and southwestern China.

Notes:— Gastrochilus bigibbus and G. pechei are close to or conspecific with G. obliquus ; see comments under those species. Nyan Tun (2014: 293) recorded G. suavis from Myanmar, but this taxon is here considered a variant of G. obliquus . In the past, some Gastrochilus specimens from the eastern Himalayas, Thailand and Indochina have been incorrectly referred to the similar G. dasypogon (Sm.) Kuntze , which differs mainly in flower colour and a longer inflorescence ( Seidenfaden 1988: 299–302). We also came across a specimen labelled G. dasypogon , said to have been imported from Burma (Ohtsuka & Hashimoto s.n., TI) and indeed with a slightly elongate inflorescence. However, in view of the absence of a description of the flower colour, there is no clear indication that it is referable to G. dasypogon .
