283. Leptipalpus Rondani, 1850c: 183 View in CoL .

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Leptipalpus brasiliensis Rondani, 1850 ; Leptis apicalis Rondani, 1848 .

TYPE SPECIES: Leptipalpus brasiliensis Rondani, 1850 (as “ Tabanus brasiliensis Rondani ”), by designation of Kerr (2010: 75).

CURRENT STATUS: Junior synonym of Chrysopilus Macquart, 1826 [ teste Kerr (2010: 75) ].

FAMILY: RHAGIONIDAE .

REMARKS: Two species were originally included in Leptipalpus by Rondani (1850c). The inclusion of Leptipalpus brasiliensis is obvious; however, the second ( Leptis apicalis Rondani, 1848 ) may not be as evident to the reader. Rondani (1850c: 184) stated: “Ai Leptipalpi oltre la specie brasiliensis dovrà riunirsi anche la mia Leptis Apicalis (studii Entomol.), e forse alcune Crisopile del Macquart; ...”. [“To the Leptipalpus ’s, in addition to the species brasiliensis , must be included also my Leptis Apicalis (of studi Entomol.) and, perhaps, some Chrysopilus ’s of Macquart; …”.] We interpret this as a clear intention by Rondani (1850c) of its inclusion in Leptipalpus . James (1968) listed both nominal species in his “Unplaced species” but failed to catalog the genus-group name. Kertész (1908) listed the genus-group name as valid and included a number of species in it without designating a type species. Kerr (2010) listed “ Tabanus brasiliensis Rondani ” as type species by monotypy, and although the stated method of fixation is erroneous, he is deemed to have made the first designation according to ICZN Code Article 69.1.1.

[Leschia] Rondani, 1861e: 62.

CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Leskia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 .

FAMILY: TACHINIDAE .
