TYPE SPECIES: Tachina unicolor Fallén, 1820 , automatic [by designation of the same species (by original designation) for Policheta Rondani, 1856 ].

CURRENT STATUS: Unnecessary new replacement name for Policheta Rondani, 1856 ; junior synonym of Policheta Rondani, 1856 [ teste O’Hara & Wood (2004: 106) ].

FAMILY: TACHINIDAE .

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 152) proposed Pericheta as a new replacement name for Policheta Rondani, 1856 , thinking that it was preoccupied by the family-group name Polychoeta (as “ Polichaeta ”) of Zetterstedt (1842: 1, 12). There can be no homonymy between a genus-group and family-group name. Herting (1984: 23) thought there was homonymy (although misspelled) between Policheta Rondani, 1856 and Polychaeta Macquart, 1851 and adopted Perichaeta , an emended version of Pericheta . However, the spelling differences in the original orthography of both Policheta and Polychaeta are sufficient to avoid homonymy, and the new replacement name is invalid.
