ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Proboscina longipes Rondani, 1856 .

TYPE SPECIES: Proboscina longipes Rondani, 1856 [nomen oblitum; = Macquartia monticola Egger, 1856 , nomen protectum], by original designation.

CURRENT STATUS: Preoccupied by Audouin, 1826; junior synonym of Eriothrix Meigen, 1803 [ teste Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 371) ].

REMARKS: Although Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 371) gave the method of type fixation for Proboscina in Rondani (1856: 88) as by original designation, they listed the type species as dating from Rondani (1862d: 163). This is incorrect. The characters in Rondani (1856: 88) that make the genus-group name available serve to also make available Proboscina longipes as the singly included species. This dating of Proboscina longipes from 1856 changes it from a junior to a senior synonym of Macquartia monticola Egger, 1856 . Rondani’s 1856 Prodromus volume was published on 10 September while Egger’s 1856 paper was published no earlier than December [see References in this paper for dating of these works]. Acceptance of Proboscina longipes Rondani as valid would upset stability as Macquartia monticola Egger (as Eriothrix monticola ) is in prevailing usage as the valid name for the taxon. Proboscina longipes has to our knowledge not been used as a valid species-group name since 1899, while Macquartia monticola has been used as a valid name in the genus Eriothrix in more than 25 works by at least 10 authors in the last 50 years and encompassing a span of not less than 10 years, including the following: Campadelli & Gardenghi (1985); Cerretti (2010); Cerretti & Tschorsnig (2003); Dunk & Tschorsnig (1998); Herting (1969, 1974, 1978, 1984); Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993); Kofler & Tschorsnig (2006); Kolomiets (1967) ; Mesnil (1975); Mihályi (1986); Pape et al. (1995); Tschorsnig (1985, 1997, 2001); Tschorsnig et al. (1997, 2003); Tschorsnig & Herting (1994, 1998); Tschorsnig & Ziegler (1999); Ziegler (2000); Ziegler & Lange (2001, 2007). In the interests of nomenclatural stability, we hereby invoke reversal of precedence (ICZN Code Article 23.9.2) and declare Proboscina longipes Rondani, 1856 a nomen oblitum and Macquartia monticola Egger, 1856 a nomen protectum.
