TYPE SPECIES: Calobata calceata Fallén, 1820 , automatic [by designation of the same species (by original designation) for Rainieria Rondani, 1843 ].
CURRENT STATUS: Unnecessary new replacement name for Rainieria Rondani, 1843 ; junior synonym of Rainieria Rondani, 1843 [ teste Sabrosky (1999: 298) ].

REMARKS: The earliest mention of Tanypus Meigen, 1803 using the spelling “ Tanipus ” that we have found in this study is in Duméril in Cuvier (1828: 215), as an incorrect subsequent spelling. In Rondani (1856) this is either an incorrect subsequent spelling or unjustified emendation (by virtue of similar spelling changes in two or more names from “y” to “i” in the same work). We thus follow ICZN Code Article 33.5 in treating this spelling in Rondani (1856) as an incorrect subsequent spelling.
