CURRENT STATUS: Unjustified emendation of Xiphocera Macquart, 1834 ; junior synonym of Ancylorhynchus Berthold, 1827 . New synonymy.

REMARKS: Name made available as an emendation by virtue of similar spelling changes in two or more names from “i” to “y” in the same work. Xiphocera Macquart, 1834 is currently treated as a junior synonym of Ancylorhynchus Berthold, 1827 [ teste Daniels (1989: 341) ].

CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Xiphura Brullé, 1832 .

REMARKS: The earliest mention of Xiphura Brullé, 1832 using the spelling “ Xyphura ” that we have found in this study is in Brullé (1833: xxxvii), as an incorrect subsequent spelling. In Rondani (1856) this is either an incorrect subsequent spelling or unjustified emendation (by virtue of similar spelling changes in two or more names from “i” to “y” in the same work). We thus follow ICZN Code Article 33.5 in treating this spelling in Rondani (1856) as an incorrect subsequent spelling. Xiphura Brullé, 1832 is currently treated as a junior synonym of Tanyptera Latreille, 1804 [ teste Oosterbroek & Theowald (1993: 87) ].
