CURRENT STATUS: Nomen oblitum; senior (but invalid) synonym of Loewia Egger, 1856 , nomen protectum [ teste this work].

REMARKS: Previous listings have Thrychogena Rondani, 1856 as a junior synonym of Loewia Egger, 1856 , but this is incorrect. Rondani’s 1856 Prodromus volume was published on 10 September while Egger’s 1856 paper was published no earlier than December [see References in this paper for dating of these works]. Acceptance of Thrychogena Rondani as valid would upset stability as Loewia Egger is in prevailing usage as the valid name for the taxon. Thrychogena has to our knowledge not been used as a valid genus-group name since 1899, while Loewia has been used in more than 25 works by at least 10 authors in the last 50 years and encompassing a span of not less than 10 years, including the following: Belshaw (1993); Bergström (2007); Cerretti & Tschorsnig (2010); Cerretti et al. (2004); Chandler et al. (2000); Hedström (1985); Herting (1984); Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993); Hubenov (1993, 2008); Kofler & Tschorsnig (2006); Merz et al. (2006); O’Hara (2002); O’Hara & Wood (2004); Richter (2004, 2008); Richter & Farinets (1990); Rognes (1986b); Tschorsnig & Herting (1994); Tschorsnig & Rezbanyai-Reser (2005); Tschorsnig & Richter (1998); Zeegers (1998); Ziegler (1996, 1998); Ziegler & Shima (1996). In the interests of nomenclatural stability, we hereby invoke reversal of precedence (ICZN Code Article 23.9.2) and declare Thrychogena Rondani, 1856 a nomen oblitum and Loewia Egger, 1856 a nomen protectum.
