Genus Ancistrosyllis McIntosh, 1878 View in CoL

Type species. Ancistrosyllis groenlandica McIntosh, 1878 , by monotypy.

Remarks. The antennae of Ancistrosyllis are very small, barely larger than the body papillae; this has led to confusion about their number. The presence of a median antenna was used to separate the genus Ancistrosyllis , with one median and two lateral antennae, from Ancistargis Jones, 1961 , with two lateral antennae ( Jones 1961). Pettibone (1966) proposed the synonymy between these genera, considering the presence of median antenna doubtful, due to the collection and fixation artefacts that cause prostomium contraction. Emerson & Fauchald (1971) disagreed, considering the character sufficient to retain Ancistargis . Ensuing studies have substantiated claims for Ancistargis ’ synonymy ( Fitzhugh & Wolf 1990; Salazar-Vallejo 1987 b). Ancistrosyllis jonesi Pettibone, 1966 , from the intertidal of sandy beaches in southeast coast of Brazil, is the only species of the genus previously recorded from Brazil ( Amaral et al. 2003).
