Variation. Notomicrus petrareptans sp. n. iS knoWn from only tWo collecting eVentS aroUnd tHe Same inSelberg, and little Variation WaS obSerVed among SpecimenS. Color Varied SligHtly, WitH Some SpecimenS darker or paler oVerall; abdominal VentriteS Were SometimeS not darkened compared to abdominal Ventrite II, or did not SHoW any darkening of tHe lateral SUbmarginS. Many SpecimenS SHoWed faint, dark longitUdinal StripeS on tHeir elytra, HoWeVer tHiS appearS be to an effect of preSerVation aS tHe StripeS became indiStinct WHen SpecimenS Were relaXed or cleaned WitH Water. SeVeral SpecimenS Were teneral and Very pale in color. THere WaS Some Variation in elytral pUnctation, WitH Some SpecimenS nearly completely impUnctate betWeen tHe diScal SerieS and tHe elytral SUtUre and otHerS SHoWing a feW Scattered pUnctUreS; a Very feW SpecimenS Were obSerVed to HaVe WHat appeared to be a Scattered line of a feW SHalloW pUnctUreS SUbtending tHe elytral SUtUre in tHiS area.

Differential diagnosis. THe combination of tHe Weak pUnctation of tHe elytra ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–2 ), reSpectiVe SHape and Size of tHe tarSal claWS ( FigS. 3, 4 View FIGURES 3–5 ) and SHape of tHe median lobe of tHe aedeagUS ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 3–5 ) readily diStingUiSH tHiS SpecieS from otHer SpecieS of tHe genUS. Notomicrus petrareptans sp. n. iS moSt Similar to N. gracilipes SHarp, 1882 in HabitUS, Size, and SHape of tHe aedeagUS, HoWeVer N. petrareptans sp. n. iS eXternally diStingUiSHable by tHe Weaker pUnctation, WHerein pUnctUreS are leSS denSe, more SHalloWly impreSSed and nearly completely lacking betWeen diScal SerieS and elytral SUtUre (pUnctation iS coarSer and preSent in tHe area betWeen tHe diScal SerieS and elytral SUtUre in N. gracilipes ), and alSo by tHe cHaracterS of tHe male tarSal claWS ( FigS. 3, 4 View FIGURES 3–5 ), WitH N. petrareptans sp. n. HaVing tHe meSotarSal claWS mUcH longer tHan tHe protarSal claWS. THe median lobe of tHe aedeagUS of N. petrareptans sp. n. ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 3–5 a-c) iS Similar to tHat of N. gracilipes , bUt iS mUcH more elongate and Slender in lateral aSpect in N. petrareptans sp. n., WitH tHe apical clUb Smaller and Hidden in lateral VieW UnleSS VieWed from a dorSally obliQUe angle. In N. gracilipes tHe clUb iS larger, tHoUgH iS Similarly nearly indiStinct in lateral VieW. EXternally, in color and in pattern and StrengtH of pUnctation, N. petrareptans sp. n. may appear Similar to otHer SpecieS SUcH aS N. malkini YoUng, 1978 or N. chailliei ManUel, 2015 , bUt iS eaSily diStingUiSHed by tHe SHape and relatiVe SizeS of tHe tarSal claWS ( FigS. 3, 4 View FIGURES 3–5 ) and by tHe SHape of aedeagUS ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 3–5 ).

Etymology. THe Specific epitapH of N. petrareptans sp. n. iS deriVed from a combination of tHe Greek or Latin petra (noUn, feminine), meaning ‘Stone’ or ‘rock’, and tHe Latin reptans (nominatiVe of tHe Verb repto, neUter), meaning ‘craWler’. It iS treated aS a noUn in tHe nominatiVe SingUlar Standing in appoSition.

Distribution. Notomicrus petrareptans sp. n. iS cUrrently only knoWn from tHe type locality and a neigHboring pooled-Up creek in eXtreme SoUtHWeStern SUriname ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ). In SHort & KadoSoe (2011), it iS liSted aS Notomicrus Sp. 1.

Habitat. BaSed on oUr collecting effortS, tHiS SpecieS appearS to be Strongly aSSociated WitH Hygropetric Seep HabitatS ( FigS. 7–10 View FIGURES 7–10 ). It WaS collected togetHer WitH otHer Hygropetric SpecialiStS, inclUding Oocyclus trio SHort & KadoSoe, 2011 ( HydropHilidae ) and SeVeral SpecieS of Fontidessus Miller & Spangler (DytiScidae) . A feW SpecimenS Were alSo foUnd in tHe detrital poolS of a non-floWing creek bed togetHer WitH otHer SpecieS of Notomicrus ( N. traili SHarp, 1882 and N. malkini YoUng, 1978 ) and otHer aQUatic beetleS knoWn from SUcH HabitatS, inclUding memberS of Canthysellus Baca and Toledo (Noteridae) , Anodocheilus Babington , Bidessonotus Régimbart , Copelatus EricHSon, Laccophilus LeacH, Thermonectus Dejean , Vatellus AUbé ( DytiScidae ), Cyloepus EricHSon ( Elmidae ), Anacaena THomSon, Chasmogenus SHarp, Derallus SHarp, Enochrus THomSon, Helochares MUlSant, Hydrobiomorpha BlackbUrn , Phaenonotum SHarp, and Tropisternus Solier ( HydropHilidae ).
