Type species. Chiton marginatus Pennant, 1777 (= Chiton cinereus Linnaeus, 1767 ), by monotypy.
Genus distribution. Mediterranean Sea, northeastern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and adjacent western Atlantic Ocean, Pacific coast near Central America, south Atlantic and Indian Oceans near South Africa and northwestern Indian Ocean. Eocene-Recent.
