Limnobia quadrinotata Meigen, 1818: 144 View in CoL . Type locality: not given (?near Stolberg [ Germany]). Limnobia variegata Macquart, 1826: 153 . Type locality: not given (northern France).

Diagnosis. Femora yellowish brown with two black rings, first indistinct, at 4/5 length of femora, second at tip, narrower than subapical yellow ring. Three small spots between base of cell R and origin of Rs. Terminal section of R1 bent to wing margin in right angle, cell dm small. Inner gonostylus with innermost lobe arched and long, coalited with outer gonostylus. Paramere with outer margin of stem sinuous, tip of paramere flattened.

Description. Male. Body length 11.8–13.0 mm, wing 13.5–14.7 mm.

Head. Yellowish brown with pale gray pollen, except vertex brownish black. One small median tubercle between eyes. Hairs on head black. Antenna 2.2–2.4 mm. Scape and pedicel yellowish brown, flagellomeres brownish black, suboval to subcylindrical, apical segments elongate, verticils considerably longer than segments. Proboscis and palpus brownish black with black hairs.

Thorax. General brownish yellow with pale gray pollen. Pronotum yellowish brown except dorsal surface brownish black. Prescutum yellowish brown with four black stripes, median pair long and slender, lateral pair short and broad. Median region of scutum yellowish brown, lobes black. Scutellum and mediotergite brownish yellow. Pleura yellowish brown. Hairs on thorax black. Coxae and trochanters yellowish brown; femora yellowish brown with two black rings, first indistinct, at 4/5 length of femora, second at tip, narrower than subapical yellow ring; tibiae and tarsi brown. Hairs on legs black.

Wing ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ) brownish hyaline, with dark brown spots at base of cell R, origin and fork of Rs and each side of stigma, three small spots between base of cell R and origin of Rs; seams along crossveins r-m, m-m, m-cu and basal sections of cells M1+2 and M3; obscure brownish irregular clouds in all marginal cells, arranged in transverse band before apex of wing; stigma yellowish. Sc1 longer than Sc2, terminal section of R1 bent to wing margin in right angle, cell dm small, m-cu before fork of M. Halter 2.3–2.5 mm long, brownish yellow except knob brown.

Abdomen. Tergites 1–8 black, tergite 9 brownish yellow with median area black. Sternites 1–8 black with posterior margin pale yellow, sternite 9 brownish yellow. Hairs on abdomen black.

Hypopygium ( Figs. 28–31 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ). Posterior margin of tergite 9 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ) emarginate, each lobe with several hairs. Gonocoxite with broad ventromesal lobe. Outer gonostylus ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ) broad, arched at 2/3 length, outer third narrowing into slender flattened spine. Inner gonostylus ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ) divided into three lobes, innermost lobe arched and long, coalited with outer gonostylus, with several short hairs at inner margin; dorsal fleshy lobe subteres with long hairs, about 1/2 length of innermost one; ventral fleshy lobe subglobular with long hairs. Paramere ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ) with outer margin of stem sinuous, tip of paramere flattened.

Female. Body length 12.5–13.7 mm, wing 13.5–14.5 mm. Similar to male.
