(Korean Name: Nu-a-nu-yeop-sae-u-gwa, new)

Diagnosis

Body laterally compressed. Eyes well-developed, rudimentary or absent, if present then round, ovoid or just composed of separated ommatidia. Antennae, calceoli or aesthetasc absent. Antenna 1 subequal to or longer than antenna 2 in length; peduncular articles 1 and 2 geniculate or not; article 2 longer than article 3; article 3 shorter than article 1; accessory flagellum present. Antenna 2, peduncular article 1 not enlarged. Mandible, molar processes triturative; palp symmetrical, mostly tri-articulate, last article falcate or normal. Maxilla 1, inner plate setose along medial margin; palp symmetrical. Maxilla 2, inner plate with oblique setal row on surface. Gnathopod 1 subchelate, not sexually dimorphic; propodus, palm with single row of simple robust spines along palmar margin. Gnathopod 2 subchelate, sexually dimorphic; carpus not produced along posterior margin of propodus, projecting between merus and propodus. Pereopods 3 and 4 not sexually dimorphic. Pereopod 5 shorter than pereopod 6; coxa with small anteroventral lobe. Pereopod 7 longer than pereopod 5. Pleonites 1 – 3, carina on dorsal margin developed or absent. Urosomites 1 – 3 with or without slender or robust dorsal spine. Urosomite 2 with pair of dorsal concavities each with one to three small spines. Uropod 1, basofacial spine present or absent. Uropod 3 biramous, not sexually dimorphic; inner ramus shorter than outer; outer ramus uni- or bi-articulate. Telson deeply, fully cleft or entire; dorsal or lateral robust spine present or absent; apical robust spine present (modified from Lowry and Myers 2013).

Remarks

In the revision of higher classification of the Amphipoda by Lowry and Myers (2013), they used the method of cladistic analysis based on morphological characters and character states, and the ‘ Gammarellid group ’ composed of Gammarella and Nuuanu was established as the new family Nuuanuidae . This is distinguished from other families of the superfamily Hadzioidea Karaman, 1943 by the shape of coxae, the enlarged basis of pereopods 5 – 7, reduced parviramous, and the scale-like inner ramus of uropod 3 ( Lowry and Myers 2013).
