Ecology and distribution: This species grows on shrubs and orange trees in primary and secondary forests and subparamo at 1320–3400 m. It is known from South America (the Galápagos Islands, Brazil and Venezuela).

Remarks: Previously R. puiggarii was known only from Brazil ( Kashiwadani & Kalb 1993, Gumboski 2016) and the Galápagos Islands ( Aptroot & Bungartz 2007). Ramalina cumanensis closely resembles R. puiggarii , but has shorter, uniseptate, ellipsoid spores (8–12 x 4–5 µm). Ramalina camptospora could also be confused with R. puiggarii , but the former species has marginal soralia with isidiform structures, and curved or sigmoid spores (12–14 x 4–4.5 µm). All three species lack medullary substances.
