Re-description

Maximum body length: ♂ 9 mm, ♀ 9.6 mm. Habitus in lateral view as in Figure 2 View Figure 2 (a). Color as described by Lemos de Castro (1973): dark brown with distinct pigmented line on posterior margins of cephalon, pereonites 1 – 7 and pleonites 1 – 5; cephalon with irregular unpigmented spots on dorsal surface, lateral lobes strongly pigmented; antenna with fifth article of peduncle and flagellum unpigmented; pereon with unpigmented areas on paramedian and median regions, epimera strongly pigmented; pleonites 1 – 5 with three large unpigmented areas, neopleurae strongly pigmented; telson strongly pigmented; uropods slightly pigmented. Cephalon ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 (b, c)) with lateral lobes slightly bent upwards, frontal shield with lateral sides almost straight; eyes consisting of 20 – 22 ommatidia. Dorsum ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 (a)) with ribs slightly developed on median and paramedian areas of pereonites 1 – 7, one pair of lateral distinct ribs on pereonites 1 – 7 gradually closer to posterior margin; noduli laterales very short inserted on lateral ribs. Pereonites 1 – 3 with ventral lobes rounded and well developed, more conspicuous on pereonites 1 and 2 ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 (d)). Pleon ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 (a, e)) with neopleura 5 not surpassing distal margin of telson; telson with narrow dorsal depression, proximal portion twice as wide as distal portion, lateral sides concave. Antennula ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 (f)) with proximal and distal articles subequal in length, distal article with three subapical aesthetascs plus apical pair. Antenna ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 (g)) with distal article of peduncle almost twice as long as flagellum; second article of flagellum twice as long as distal article, distal article bearing one lateral aesthetasc. Mandible with molar penicil of about eight branches, right mandible ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (a)) with 1 + 1 penicils, left mandible ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (b)) with 2 + 1 penicils. Maxillula ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (c)) inner endite bearing two hairy penicils, distal margin with lateral tip; outer endite of 4 + 4 teeth, inner set with cleft apex. Maxilla ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (d)) with inner and outer lobes rounded, inner lobe covered with thick setae, outer lobe twice as wide as inner lobe. Maxilliped ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (e)) palp with two distinct setae on proximal article; endite subrectangular densely covered with thin setae, median seta strong, surpassing distal margin. Pereopods 1 – 7 with sternal setae sparse, carpus 1 with distal seta serrate at apex; dactylus with inner claw reaching distal margin of outer claw, dactylar seta pilose at apex. Uropod ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (a)) endopod about twice as long as exopod, exopod slightly grooved on outer margin. Pleopod 1 – 5 exopods with respiratory surface mostly exposed ( Figures 4 View Figure 4 (d – h), 5(a, b)).

Male: Pereopod 1 ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (b)) merus and carpus slightly setose; pereopod 7 ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (c)) ischium with distal ventral portion slightly depressed, proximal portion of merus with slight longitudinal depression bearing short setae. Pleopod 1 ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (d)) exopod inner margin rounded, distal margin depressed on median portion, outer margin rounded and slightly irregular; endopod about twice as long as exopod, distal portion slightly bent outwards. Pleopod 2 ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (e)) exopod triangular, outer margin concave; endopod rather slender and slightly longer than exopod. Pleopod 3 and 4 exopods as in Figure 4 View Figure 4 (f) and (g), respectively. Pleopod 5 exopod ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 (h)) rhomboid, inner portion covered with thin setae, distal margin straight, bearing five short setae.

Remarks

Pudeoniscus obscurus differs from P. birabeni in having fan-shaped dorsal scale-setae, a ventral lobe on pereonite 3, and a telson with sub-quadrangular distal portion, as well as in the shape of male pleopods 1 and 2.

Distribution

This species is recorded only from São Paulo state ( Figure 14 View Figure 14 (b)).
