1. Schoenus compar L., View in CoL Mant. Pl. Altera: 177 (1771).

Tetraria compar (L.) T.Lestib., Essai Cypér.: 36 (1819). Elynanthus compar (L.) T.Lestib . ex Nees, Linnaea 7: 520 (1832). Elynanthus compar (L.) Boeckeler , Linnaea 38: 256, partim. (1874), nom. illeg. Tetraria compar (L.) C.B.Clarke in T.A. Durand & H. Schinz. Consp. Fl. Afric. 5: 660 (1894). Type: South Africa, Western Cape Province, 3418 (Simonstown): Cape of Good Hope, (–AD), without date, without collector LINN-HL68-11 (LINN, lecto. - image!, [2 sheets], designated by Archer in Cafferty and Jarvis in Taxon 53: 179 (2004)).

Tetraria thuarii P.Beauv., Mém. Cl. Sci. Math. Inst. Natl. France 13: 54 (1812). Type: South Africa, Western Cape Province, 3418 (Simonstown): Cap de Bonne Espérance, (–AD), without date, Du Petit-Thouars L.M.A. s.n. (G[G00190194], lecto. - image!, here designated; P[P00461881] - image!, isolecto.). [Note: In his description of T. thuarii, Clarke included Cyathocoma ecklonii Nees and Ideleria capensis Kunth as synonyms for T. thuarii ( Clarke, 1900) . Archer et al., 1997 showed that Clarke erred in this inclusion, and thus we are not including either of these names as synonyms for T. thuarii ].

Tetraria thuarii var. β gracilior C.B.Clarke in T.A. Durand & H. Schinz, Consp. Fl. Afric. 5: 663 (1894). Type: not designated.

Rhynchospora nitida Spreng., Neue Entdeck. Pflanzenk. 3: 10 (1822). Type: not designated.

Elynanthus arenarius (Schrad.) Nees, Linnaea 9: 298 (1834). Schoenus arenarius Schrad. , Anal. Cyp.: 126–127 (1832). Type: South Africa, Cape Provinces, without date, Sieber 106 (K[K000244938], lecto.!, here designated; H, MEL[MEL2400964, MEL2400965], S, - image!, isolecto.).[The specimen labelled as Type of S. arenarius at BM[BM000991155] collected by Banks and Solander s.n. in 1769 from New Zealand was most recently annotated on 1 Aug 2008 to Morelotia af fi nis (Brongn) S.T.Blake by J.J. Bruhl].

Elynanthus viscosus (Schrad.) Nees, Linnaea 9: 298 (1834). Schoenus viscosus Schrad. , Anal. Cyp.: 127–128, t. 4, f. 2 (1832). Type: not designated.

Schoenus pungens Willd. ex Kunth , in Enum. Pl. 2: 308 (1837). Type: not designated. [A possible type of this species, which appears to be S. compar , is at B[B -W 01103 -01 0]; however, this collection is without collector name, number or date and is reported to have been collected from Mauritius. This is a dubious specimen with confusing collector and collection locality information and thus, we deem it not suitable for type material].

Tetraria compar var. β minor Kük. , Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 48: 240 (1940).

Type: South Africa, Western Cape Province, 3419 (Caledon): Terra Capensis, Regio occidentalis, Houw Hoek, (–AD), 6 Feb 1896, Schlechter 7383 (BOL), lecto.!, here designated; GRA!, K!, WAG!, P[P00461889, P00461890] - image!, L - image!, isolecto.). [ Kükenthal, 1940 also cited three other specimens (Drège 2457, Drège 1633 and Drège 3945), of which the first two along with the type appear to be depauperate examples of S.compar . Drège 3945, on the other hand, is a specimen of S. arenicolus ].

Caespitose, phyllopodic perennial graminoid. Often partly or almost entirely viscous, especially on sheaths and inflorescences. Culms terete, robust, (247–)465–612(− 700) × 1.0–1.6(− 2.3) mm. Leaves basal, 2–5(− 6), relatively long, 86–234(− 305) × 0.2–1.0(− 1.8) mm, usually straight, not proximally channelled, margin usually serrate above sheath. Sheaths often ivory in colour, but can have some reddish streaks, papery, viscous, usually loosely clasping culm, longitudinally striate. Ligule long, membranaceous, 1.6–3.7(− 6.8) mm. In fl orescence a short, compact panicle, 15–26(− 45) × 11–17(− 27) mm, proximal rachis length 4–10(− 19) mm, sometimes viscous. Proximal primary in fl orescence bracts firm, non-sheathing, 27–113(− 219) mm long, exceeding length of inflorescence several times, with or without notable longitudinal veins. Proximal and subproximal primary inflorescence bracts often with inconspicuous membranaceous extensions as base. Spikes 2–8, 4–16(− 24) mm long, overlapping. Spikelets oblong, 5.5–9.2(− 10.8) × 1.1–2.6(− 3.0) mm, pedicellate, 1–5(− 8) spikelets/spike, colour darkens with age to a reddish-brown, 2–3 proximal prophylls per spikelet, prophylls with notable, raised vein extending to mucro. Rachilla 0.1–2.6(− 4.9) mm long, often flat, relatively stout. Glumes 4–7(− 8) per spikelet, proximal glume (1.6–)2.7–3.9(− 7.3) mm long, subproximal glume (1.6–)3.2–5.0(− 8.8) mm long, thick, firm, often shiny, distichous, lower glumes relatively divergent, upper glumes longer than basal ones, apex acute to acuminate. Mucros thick and firm if present, proximal mucro length (0–)0.2–1.2(− 1.8) mm, subproximal mucro length (0–)0.2–1.0(− 1.6) mm. Stamens 3(− 6) per floret, anthers 2.5–5.1(− 6.8) mm long. Stigmas (2–)3-branched. Perianth bristles approximately 3, vestigial. Nutlet broad elliptic, darkening with maturity to brown, 3.2–6.9 × 1.3–3.3 mm. Nutlet beak relatively wide, 1.0– 3.5 mm long, brown to dark purple at maturity. ( Figs. 1 View Fig and 2 View Fig ).

Flowering: September to July.

Distribution and ecology: the distribution of S. compar is most dense in southwestern South Africa, although it does reach the Cederberg mountains in the north and Humansdorp in the east ( Fig. 3 View Fig ). This species grows in dry sites among fynbos vegetation, often on coarse growing substrates - such as sand or rocks - at lower elevations than most other southern African Schoenus species, ranging from 20 to over 800 m.

Diagnosis: Schoenus compar is one of four species in this group (in addition to S. arenicolus , S. pictus and S. pseudoloreus ) that can be partially viscous. However, S. compar can be distinguished from other similar species by its papery, ivory leaf sheaths, as well as by its compact and thick inflorescences. The spikelets are also distinct, as the glumes are relatively firm and can be viscous, ranging in colour from gold when young to reddish-brown when mature. Populations of S. compar from outside of the Cape Peninsula region of South Africa are often more variable in these key characters, with red interspersed on the ivory leaf sheaths, which tend to be more firm in texture. In addition, S. compar plants from the edge of the species northern distribution have depauperate inflorescences with relatively few spikelets.

A variant of S. compar has been collected in the eastern part of the species' range, in an area ranging from Langeberg to the Zitzikamma Mountains (e.g. Esterhuysen 17,228; Esterhuysen 16,316; Getliffe 1125; McDonald 2022; Stokoe 2118). The habit and inflorescence of this variant are similar to that of S. compar ; however, its glumes are more papery and thin relative to specimens collected from locations to the west. In addition, this eastern variant has leaf sheaths that are redder in colour compared to western specimens and can be taller. The relatively thin glumes and compact inflorescence distinguish this variant from S. arenicolus —a species that also has reddish leaf sheaths and spikelets with a similar shape to those of S. compar .
