MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Philippines. ESTASE 2: stn DW 1, 1260-1300 m, 1 dd.
14°05’N, 120°01’E, 2200 m, 1 dd (Fig. 22G). Fiji. MUSORSTOM 10: stn CP 1361, SE of Viti Levu 18°00’S, Loyalty Ridge. BIOGEOCAL: stn CP 238, 21°28’S, 166°23’E, 178°54’E, 1058-1091 m, 1 dd.
DISTRIBUTION. — Shells collected from Fiji, New Caledonia and the Philippines (Fig. 23), in 1091-2200 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell morphology. Length 8 mm, width 5 mm (largest shell examined, partially broken). Shell thin, oval, with convex sides (Fig. 22G). Body whorl very large, about 4/5 of the shell length. Spire short, conical, with 3-4 whorls. Suture channeled. Umbilicus closed. Aperture long and narrow, wider anteriorly. The aperture is about 6/7 of the body whorl length. The anterior end of the aperture is expanded into a very short lip. Columellar margin thickened, slightly oblique, with a small, single fold. Sculpture of a number of punctuated spiral grooves. The punctuations are small, oval, partially fused together within each groove. The grooves are separated by gaps that are several times wider than the grooves. Colour cream to pale grey.
Anatomy. Unknown. All shells collected lacked soft parts.
REMARKS. — “ Acteon ” sp. 7 is most similar in shell morphology to “ Acteon ” boteroi n. sp. Differences between these two species include the longer and more conical spire of “ A. ” boteroi and the larger gaps separating the spiral grooves of “ Acteon ” sp. 7.
“ Acteon ” sp. 7 appears to be a distinctive species of Acteonidae , clearly different from other Indo-Pacific species, but it is not named here because of the absence of enough material. The three shells collected are partially broken and heavily eroded.
A definitive generic placement for this species is not possible until complete specimens become available for study.
