TYPE LOCALITY: Chile, Valdivia Prov .
DISTRIBUTION: C and S Chile, including Mocha and Chiloe islands, to Straits of Magellan, and S Argentina (Neuquen Prov. to Chubut).
SYNONYMS: araucanus, bicolor , bullocki, chiloensis, fossor , michaelseni, microtis .
COMMENTS: Pearson (1984) noted that the generic association and specific status of michaelseni, arranged by Osgood (1943) as a subspecies, are uncertain.
