TYPE LOCALITY: Argentina, Mendoza Prov., Fort San Rafael .
DISTRIBUTION: E and W flanks of S Andes along Chile-Argentina boundary, about 34°S latitude south to Straits of Magellan. C Chilean distribution augmented by Pine et al. (1979).
SYNONYMS: alleni , connectens , fumosus , vestitus .
COMMENTS: Treated as a subspecies of C. megalonyx by Mann (1978) and Tamayo and Frassinetti (1980); recognized as species by Osgood (1943) and Pearson (1984). Osgood (1943) designated the skin of Notiomys connectens as the holotype of this composite specimen and synonymized it with [C.] macronyx vestitus .
