Rhipidomys latimanus (Tomes, 1860) . Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1860:213.
TYPE LOCALITY: Ecuador, Chimborazo Prov., Pallatanga, 1485 m .
DISTRIBUTION: Montane forests of C and W Colombia and Ecuador.
SYNONYMS: cocalensis, microtis , mollissimus, pictor.
COMMENTS: This species may encompass Andean populations in E Colombia and Venezuela identified as R. venezuelae ( Handley, 1976) ; its status with regard to R. scandens and R. mastacalis also needs clarification. Cabrera (1961) arranged fulviventer and venustus as subspecies, but these two forms are distinct from one another and from the latimanus-venezuelae complex in Venezuela ( Handley, 1976). Karyotype reported by Gardner and Patton (1976).
