Family Testudinidae Gray, 1825 View in CoL
Testudo hermanni Gmelin, 1789 View in CoL .—Hermann’s tortoise is a small to medium sized terrestrial tortoise occurring in southern Europe. This species is a typical member of Testudo View in CoL . Both the males and females have a large horny scale or nail on the end of their tails. Adult males tend to be smaller than females, have a slight plastral concavity, and have much larger and longer tails. Typical habitat in the wild is variable, including woods, scrub, heath, grassland, and farmland.
Testudo marginata Schoepf, 1792 View in CoL .—Marginated tortoise is a medium−sized tortoise originally native to Greece; one of the largest of the Mediterranean species. It is a terrestrial species; typical habitat is arid, scrubby, rocky hillsides, where the tortoises spend mornings and late afternoons browsing on weeds, shrubs, and flowers while resting in the shade during the hottest afternoon hours.
