Diagnosis. Sexually dimorphic. Male with rostrum obliquely upwards not reaches cornea, dorsal margin with 3 to 5 teeth, ventral margin unarmed. Female with rostrum nearly horizontal, reaches or overreaching the second antennular peduncle, dorsal margin with 5 or 6 teeth, ventral margin with 2 to 4 teeth. Both sexes with hepatic spine proeminent and outstanding, antennal spine small. First pereopods overreaching the scaphocerite with part of chela, fingers longer than palm. Second pereopods unequal, especially in male. Major pereopod overreaching the scaphocerite with part of carpus, finger smaller than palm, cutting edge of chela with 2 to 5 teeth and fixed finger with 1 to 4 denticles in proximal half. Third to fifth pereopods with bifid dactyli. Abdomen with all pleura rounded, third somite produced medially as a proeminet, slightly compressed cap-overreaching base of fourth somite. Telson with 2 pairs of dorsal spines and 3 pairs of spines on posterior margin.
Distribution. Western Atlantic: USA (North Caroline, Florida), Bermuda, Belize, Bahamas, Cuba (Batabanó Gulf), Virgin Islands, Antigua, Bonaire, Colombia, Venezuela (La Pecha Island), Brazil (Pernambuco [Fernando de Noronha], Bahia [Abrolhos], Espírito Santo) ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 ) ( Chace, 1958, 1972; Williams, 1984; Martínez-Iglesias, 1986; Nizinski, 2003; Coelho Filho, 2006; Wirtz et al., 2009).
Material examined. BAHIA. Abrolhos, Santa Bárbara, 3 females, (FURG-1817); Abrolhos, Santa Bárbara, 3 females, (FURG-1818); Abrolhos, 2 indeterminate, (FURG-1911).
Ecological notes. The species occurs at depths between 1,5 to 40 m, in funds rocky with anemone, macroalgae, actinarians, corals, scyphozoan, and also in sandy bottoms with sparse vegetation ( Chace, 1958; Criales, 1984; Martinez-Iglesias, 1986; Wirtz et al., 2009). Ancylomenes pedersoni is know for its cleaning activity of some species of fish ( Johnson & Ruben, 1988; Okuno & Bruce, 2010). Limbaugh et al. (1961) noted that fish have gill and oral cavities clean activity was completed at the time the shrimp is satisfied, no matter the amount of fish that await cleaning.
