Comments. Synonymy and Diagnosis of Hippasteria is extensive. Mah et al. (2014 a) identified seven species within Hippasteria using the cytochrome oxidase I gene subunit, with some lineages displaying a complex or cluster of multiple species. The relevant subdivision is referred to herein.
