Ståhls et al. (2008) found three different clades in the COI sequences of specimens of the C. vernalis complex from various parts of Europe. However, these clades mismatched with morphological characters. While it is possible that different species are involved, the available identification keys do not allow separating different species. All records of specimens identified as C. rotundiventris Becker or C. ruficollis Becker , both syonymised with C. vernalis by Ståhls et al. (2008), have been lumped with C. vernalis .
