Macronota hopponus Niijima & Kinoshita, 1923: 232 View in CoL (type locality: Hoppo, Formosa [=Peipu, Hsinchu Hsien, Taiwan), plate. I, fig. 12. Synonymized with C. penicillata by Miwa & Chûjô 1939: 83.
Diagnosis. See remarks of C. penicillata .
Variation. Body length 23.6–24.9 mm; width 10.7–11.4 mm. Most individuals with orange-red tomentum ( Fig. 25, 28 View FIGURES 21 – 33 ) and wine-red metallic reflections, while a small number with yellow tomentum and green metallic reflections ( Figs. 26–27 View FIGURES 21 – 33 ). A few males with setae in the abdominal groove ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 21 – 33 ).
Type material. Syntype of Coilodera formosana labeled: Formosa, Tainan [handwriting on pale yellow label] / formosana Mos. Type [handwriting of Moser on pale yellow label] / Type [red label] / subsp. formosana Mos. [handwriting of Moser on pale yellow label] (female, MFNB, Figs. 45–46 View FIGURES 34 – 48 ).
Comments on type material. The sex, number, and collecting site of the type series of Coilodera formosana were not mentioned in the original publication ( Moser 1910). Therefore, it was difficult to determine whether other specimens from Formosa in MFNB were included in the type series, and only the single female with a handwritten identification label of Moser here regard as syntype.
The type specimens (one male and three female) of Macronota hopponus Niijima & Mastumura, 1923 are housed in EIHU (Dr. Masahiro Ohara, personal communication, September 2014) and unavailable for study at present.

Distribution. This species is endemic to the island of Taiwan.
Natural history. A newly emerged adult of this species was recorded in the wood-feeding cockroach galleries of Salganea raggei (Blattaria: Blaberidae : Panesthiinae ) ( Kon et al. 2003).
Remarks. The larvae morphology of Coilodera formosana and seven other species of Taenioderini were presented in detail in Vendl et al. (2014), which is the first study on the immature stages of this tribe.
