Ceratodon purpureus var. rotundifolius Berggr. has been reported from Italy and this name is considered at present a synonym of Ceratodon heterophyllus Kindb. According to Hill et al. (2006) European records of C. heterophyllus are based on plants that lack capsules and according to the account of Burley & Pritchard (1990) are not reliable. Consequently Ceratodon heterophyllus should also be excluded from the Mediterranean area.
