nom. nov.

Miconia grandifoliata R.Goldenb. & Michelang. View in CoL , nom. nov.

Replaced name:— Miconia grandifolia Ule (1915: 359) . Type:— PERU. Loreto: Leticia, June 1902, E.Ule 6207 (holotype B†, lectotype K!, here designated [K000536479]; isolectotpye HBG), non Miconia grandifolia D.Don in Loudon (1830: 174).

Miconia grandifolia Ule is a later homonym of Miconia grandifolia D.Don. Miconia grandifolia D.Don was coined without a type (not a requirement at the time) for a plant cultivated at Chelsea Gardens, but originally from Trinidad. Even though it is impossible to establish to what species Miconia grandifolia D.Don exactly corresponds, the species described by Ule still requires a new name.

Miconia grandifoliata View in CoL occurs in Amazonian Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil ( Wurdack 1980, Goldenberg 2000). An image of the type is available on the Kew Herbarium site (http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/). Miconia grandifoliata View in CoL resembles Miconia impetiolaris ( Swartz 1788: 70) D.Don ex Candolle (1828: 183) View in CoL due to their large, sub-sessile and plinerved leaves. However, Miconia impetiolaris View in CoL has stellate or roughenedclavate trichomes on the abaxial surface of the leaves and an expanded stigma, while the leaf abaxial surface of M. grandifoliata View in CoL is glabrous and the stigma is punctiform.

The holotype housed at B was destroyed during World Word II in 1943, like all other types of Melastomataceae View in CoL . The K specimen is selected as the lectotype .

It should be noted that there is a specimen at K, Killip 5120 [ K000536478 ], annotated as “ Miconia grandifolia Gleason sp. nov. ” However, this species was described as Ossaea grandifolia Gleason (1925: 457) of which the K specimen is an isotype, and the holotype is at NY [ NY00245653 ] .
