Clavicornaltica sakishimana Suenaga and Yoshida

[Japanese name: Sakishima-higebuto-komaru-tobi-hamushi]

( Figs 1a View FIGURE 1 , 2a, d, g View FIGURE 2 , 3a, b View FIGURE 3 , 4a–d View FIGURE 4 , 5a–c View FIGURE 5 , 6a, b View FIGURE 6 )

Clavicornaltica sakishimana Suenaga and Yoshida 2016: 6 [type locality: Japan (Ishigaki-jima I.) and Taiwan]; Nakamura 2022: 20 [new record: Iriomote-jima I. and Yonaguni-jima I.].

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished from other Japanese species by the following features: body small and oval, 0.92–1.20 mm in length ( Fig. 1a View FIGURE 1 ); elytral punctures shallow and indistinct, arranged in longitudinal rows; hind wing well developed in male ( Fig. 3a View FIGURE 3 ) and degraded in female ( Fig. 3b View FIGURE 3 ); aedeagus rounded anteriorly; apical margin notched at middle; lateral sides subparallel, gradually widened to apex ( Figs 4 a, b View FIGURE 4 ); endophallus extremely long, and sclerotized part at near base inverted U-shaped with pair of projection at base ( Figs 4a View FIGURE 4 , 6a View FIGURE 6 ); spermatheca ( Fig. 5a View FIGURE 5 ): receptacle slender, strongly bent, parallel laterally; pump long and cylindrical, projected at apex; spermathecal gland valve stout. This species is especially similar to C. doeberli Damaška and Aston, 2019 , but distinguished by notched aedeagus at apex, and smoothly curved spermatheca. This species is also distinguished from similar species, C. vietnamensis Konstantinov and Duckett, 2005 and C. longsheng Konstantinov and Duckett, 2005 by parallel side of spermatheca ( Fig. 5a View FIGURE 5 ).

Redescription. BL: 0.92–1.20 mm (1.05±0.09, n = 11), BW: 0.60–0.74 mm (0.67±0.04, n = 11), PL: 0.22–0.28 mm (0.24±0.02, n = 11), PW: 0.50–0.60 mm (0.55±0.03, n = 11), EL: 0.68–0.82 mm (0.73±0.05, n = 11), EW: 0.24–0.40 mm (0.35±0.05, n = 11), HTL: 0.24–0.28 mm (0.26±0.02, n = 4).

Body oval and convex.

Coloration. Body pale brown ( Fig. 1a View FIGURE 1 ). Antennae and legs yellowish brown.

Head. Head rectangular, very shallowly and sparsely punctate ( Fig. 2a View FIGURE 2 ); vertex smooth; frontal tubercles indistinct; frontal carina absent. Antennae: clava curved interiorly, straight exteriorly, apical margin of last antennomere somewhat truncate ( Fig. 2d View FIGURE 2 ).

Thorax. Pronotum lunate, somewhat convex, very shallowly and sparsely punctate. Scutellum subtriangular. Elytra somewhat convex, shallowly and sparsely punctate, punctures arranged in longitudinal rows. Hind wings well developed in male ( Fig. 3a View FIGURE 3 ), and degraded in female ( Fig. 3b View FIGURE 3 ). Metafemora oval, sparsely haired.

Abdomen. Middle part of the second abdominal sternite with a sharply raised carina and seven to 21 coarse and strong punctures ( Fig. 2g View FIGURE 2 ). Pygidium of male subtriangular with a pair of ridges in the middle.

M a l e. Aedeagus rather slender ( Figs 4a View FIGURE 4 , 6a View FIGURE 6 ), strongly curved ventrally in lateral view ( Figs 4b View FIGURE 4 , 6b View FIGURE 6 ); apical margin weakly rounded, notched at middle ( Fig.4a View FIGURE 4 ); lateral sides subparallel, gradually widened to apex.Endophallus extremely long and cylindrical, Y-shaped at base; sclerotized part at near base inverted U-shaped plate with pair of projection at bases ( Figs 4a View FIGURE 4 , 6a View FIGURE 6 ). Spicule V-shaped ( Fig. 4c View FIGURE 4 ). Tegmen Y-shaped ( Fig. 4d View FIGURE 4 ).

F e m a l e. Spermatheca ( Fig. 5a View FIGURE 5 ): receptacle slender, strongly bent, parallel laterally; pump long and cylindrical, projected at apex; spermathecal gland valve stout. Vaginal palpi deeply V-shaped, slender with five to six pores on middle and seven setae on apex ( Fig. 5b View FIGURE 5 ). Tignum ( Fig. 5c View FIGURE 5 ): sclerotized part spine-shaped, long and slender.
