N.B. Some are as Belba geniculosa Oudemans , Belba geniculatus (Linnaeus) or other generic combinations ( Damaeus , Oribata ); Nicolet’s (1855), Berlese’s (1892, 1896a) and Oudemans’s (1897) sense of Acarus geniculatus Linn. seems generally accepted in the literature as referring to D. onustus Koch , but the juveniles illustrated in these works clearly represent different (unknown) species of Damaeus . Nicolet (1855) and Michael (1888) both suggested that an earlier species of Koch, Damaeus torvus Koch, 1835 , was a nymph of D. geniculatus (i.e., D. onustus ), but this seems equivocal at best. See also Spatiodamaeus verticillipes , below.

Nymph: Michael 1880b (Ds); Michael 1888 (Ds)

N.B. Michael (1888) considered Nothrus pollinosus Koch, 1839 to be a nymph of S. verticillipes , but in an earlier paper (1880b) he expressed doubt, and Nicolet (1855) did not even mention this possibility. Opinions of Oudemans (1897, 1900 c, 1937), which also bring the name Damaeus torvus Koch, 1835 into the issue, further add to the uncertainty. Since doubt exists and nomenclatural stability is in question, we consider both N. pollinosus and D. torvus to be species inquirenda . See also Damaeus onustus , above.
