Tradescantia umbraculifera Handel-Mazzetti (1908: 204–205 , tab. 19[1]) ( Figs. 7–8 )

Type: — BRAZIL. SÃO PAULO: Campinas : January 1900, J. C. Novaes 1218 (lectotype [designated here]: WU-0061328! [ Fig. 7 ]; isolectotype: US-389999! [barcode 00046114]) .

The protologue of T. umbraculifera provides the following information on the type: “ São Paulo. In silvaticis inter Faxina et Apiahy, ca. 800 m s. m. Prope »Fazenda bella vista« in districtu urbis S. Cruz ad flumen Rio Pardo, ca. 500 m. Campinas (leg. Campos Novaes)”. A photograph was also provided (tab. 19[1]). We were able to locate two specimens that can be considered as original material for this name: US-389999 and WU-0061328. Considering that Heinrich Raphael Eduard von Handel-Mazzetti lived and worked in Vienna, we designate here WU-0061328 ( Fig. 7 ) as lectotype of the name T. umbraculifera . Furthermore, the specimen on WU-0061328 is in accordance with the morphological description provided in the protologue, and the left branch is the same as the one shown in the photograph (tab. 19[1]).

Previous unpublished work by Barreto (1997) and Pellegrini (2015) have also suggested the gathering J. C. Novaes 1218 as type of T. umbraculifera . However, they did not formally typify this species. Formal lectotypification of T. umbraculifera is relevant in our study because this species is morphologically similar to T. serrana and fixing the identity of T. umbraculifera prevents future taxonomic confusion such as that presented above with T. crassula and T. schwirkowskiana (see Hassemer et al. 2017), and also the case of T. multibracteata Ferrarese et al. in Büneker et al. (2017: 90–95) and T. valida Brückner in Anonymous (1932: 510) (see Büneker et al. 2017).

Distribution: —Southern Brazil: Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo states ( Barreto 1997, Aona & Pellegrini 2015).

Habitat: —Moist forest understorey, 0–2000 m ( Barreto 1997).

Conservation status: —Least concern (LC). This species has a relatively wide distribution and does not seem to be currently threatened with extinction.
