Type material examined. Lectotype ♂ ( Fig. 37 ): S. Nigeria, Lagos [Label: 1908] H. Strachan leg. ( NHMUK); with labels: “Lagos. / Strachan. / 1908-216.”; “ Macrotarsipus / sexualis. / Type ♂. Hmpsn.”; “ Type / H.T.” . Paralectotypes 2♀♀ ( Fig. 38 ) with the same data .

In the original description, Hampson (1910) lists 1♂ and 2♀♀ as primary types. Here we designate the male specimen as the lectotype. The two females are paralectotypes. Hampson states further: “the larva bores in Ipomoea , the cocoon appearing half out of the burrow with the pupa projecting from it when the moth emerges”. So far only known from the type series. The taxon waterloti Le Cerf, 1917 is not a synonym of M. sexualis , but a distinct species (stat. nov.) and is here placed in Lepidopoda . See remark for the genus above.
