( Figs 54–56 View FIGURES 51–56 , 59–60 View FIGURES 57–60 )

Tachina rudis Fallén, 1810: 279 . Syntypes, males and females (NHRS and/or MZLU, not examined). Type locality: Sweden. [For other synonyms see Herting (1984: 103).]

Diagnosis. This species closely resembles P. linguacercus , but may be distinguished from it by the narrower male frons and the strongly dilated female fore tarsus. Medium to large-sized species; 3 postsutural dorsocentral setae; anatergite bare; palpus reddish yellow; frons at narrowest point 0.05–0.08 of head width in male, 0.30–0.40 in female; female fore tarsus with 3rd to 5th tarsomeres strongly dilated, 4th tarsomere about 1.5 times as wide as long.

Description of terminalia. Male: 6th abdominal tergite completely separated from syntergosternite 7+8, intersegmental membrane between them sometimes weakly sclerotized. Female: 6th tergite entire, with several setae on median portion and a row of long and strong setae on posterior margin; 6th and 7th spiracles on ventral margin and posteromedian margin of 6th tergite, respectively; 6th sternite about 2 times as long as 6th tergite, with several strong setae on posterior 1/2; 7th tergite narrowly separated mid-dorsally into hemitergites, almost as long as 6th tergite, with a row of strong setae along posterior margin; 7th sternite nearly as long as 6th sternite, with fine hairs on posterior 1/3; 8th tergite reduced to very short and rather high hemitergites, without hairs; 8th sternite long quadrate in form, with rather long hairs; epiproct divided into two small sclerites, each with a strong seta.

Material examined from Japan (all in KUM). Hokkaido: 80 males, 5 females, Shiretoko, Mt. Rausu and Shiretoko Pass ; Mts. Daisetsu , Aizankei , Tenninkyo and Yukomanbetsu ; Tokachi , Shotoshibetsu ; Ashoro , Berabonai and Fujikawa. Honshu: 10 males, 9 females, Fukushima Pref., Aizukogen ; Saitama Pref., Ohtaki ; Nagano Pref., Shimashimadani. Kyushu: 13 males, 19 females, Fukuoka Pref., Mt. Shioji and Mt. Kusenbu .

Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu); China (Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Liaoning), Europe (all), Russia (all).

Remarks. This is one of the most common Panzeria species found in the Palearctic Region from May to July, and closely resembles P. linguacercus occurring at the same time of year and same places in East Asia. The male terminalia of this species are slightly different among the material collected in different localities of Japan, such as: the cerci in lateral view are nearly straight along dorsal margin or weakly curved near middle; in dorsal view they are wide and strongly narrowed from base to basal 1/3, then nearly parallel-sided to apical 2/3 and tapering to apex, or, rather weakly narrowed from base to basal 1/2, then nearly parallel-sided to apical 1/7 and narrowed to apex.
